McNeese State Advances to Semifinals, Defeats Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-1

BEAUMONT, Texas – Fourth-seeded McNeese State advanced to the 2015 Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament semifinals for the second-straight year with a 4-1 win over fifth-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center this afternoon.
Wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by identical scores of 8-4 allowed the Cowgirls to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the match. Sarah Jurakova and Vivien Borbely of McNeese topped Maider Martin and Venesa Figueroa of A&M-Corpus Christi at the third doubles position. McNeese then clinched the doubles point as the tandem of Julia Kral and Hannah Brett took the second doubles over the Islanders’ Jelena Dzinic and Chelsea Horan.
The Cowgirls took a 2-0 lead after Jurakova topped all-conference singles player Martin of A&M-Corpus Christ, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. The Islanders’ lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles where Kerry Galhos defeated the Cowgirls’ Anastasija Trubich, 6-4, 6-1, to make the match score 2-1. Next to claim a point for McNeese was first-team all-Southland singles player Kral who earned a three-set 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Judit Vives. First-team all-conference selection Gawlik defeated Dzinic at the top spot, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 to clinch the match for the Cowgirls.
McNeese State’s Brett was battling all-conference selection Celia Rodriguez of A&M-Corpus Christi at No. 3 singles when the match was clinched by the Cowgirls, Brett was up 5-4 in the third. Vivien Borbely of McNeese and the Islanders’ Horan were also in the third set at No. 5 singles.
The Cowgirls (13-7) will now face No. 1 seed Nicholls (19-4) tomorrow morning in the semifinals of the tournament, match time is slated for 11 a.m. CST from Beaumont. The Colonels swept eighth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana 4-0 earlier this afternoon.
The Southland tournament continues with two more quarterfinal matches this afternoon. Women’s semifinals will take place tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. CST and the tournament championship will be played Sunday at 11 a.m. with the winner receiving the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
