Houston Baptist 10, UT Arlington 4
HOUSTON, Texas – After UT Arlington scored three in the top of the eighth to close within two, Houston Baptist answered with four in the bottom half to cruise to a 10-4 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
 
Senior catcher Samm Wiggins was 3-for-5, including his 14th double of the season, a run, and he picked off two runners to end innings for the Huskies (22-20). Senior centerfielder Zach Nehrir was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored, while junior designated hitter Austin Saenz was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Junior shortstop Louie Payetta was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs, senior third baseman Curtis Jones was 2-for-5 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base and senior rightfielder Thomas Clay was 2-for-4 with two runs.
 
Senior righthander Ross Kennell (1-0) picked up the win, throwing three shutout innings, with three strikeouts. Junior Dylan Zarosky recorded his team-leading third save of the season and moved within one of HBU’s all-time top five with the ninth save of his career.
 
Levi Scott was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Travis Sibley was 2-for-5 with two RBIs for the Mavericks (17-26). Eric Tate was 2-for-2 with a run, and Matt McLean doubled and scored a run.
 
Justin Schedler took the loss for UTA, allowing three runs, all of which were unearned, on four hits in four innings.
 
The Huskies got on the board in the bottom of the first as Payetta reached on a dropped fly ball and Jones singled to center. Wiggins grounded to second, but the throw for the force out at second was wide of the bag, and the bases were loaded. Payetta scored on a wild pitch, then Saenz grounded out to score Jones and put HBU ahead, 2-0.
 
With two outs in the fourth, Clay reached on an error and went to second on the play, then Nehrir followed with an RBI single to right.
 
UTA loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, but Wiggins picked off Sibley at second to end the threat. HBU then added another two-out run in the bottom half when Wiggins hustled out a double, then scored on a single by Saenz.
 
The Mavericks scored in the sixth on singles by Christian Hollie, Tate and TJ Hillman to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Huskies responded with a pair in the bottom half. HBU loaded the bases on a pair of hit batters and a bunt single by Clay. Junior leftfielder Brandon Morones scored on an error and an RBI groundout by Nehrir made the score, 6-1.
 
UTA loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, then Sibley slapped a two-run single to rightcenter. McLean scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 6-4, but Zarosky struck out Tanner Houston, then Wiggins picked off Scott at first.
 
HBU broke the game open with four runs in the bottom half, getting RBI singles by Nehrir, Jones and Seanz, then tacking on the game’s final tally on a double steal, with Jones coming home on the play.
 
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face Nicholls in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Friday and Saturday’s games begin at 6 p.m., followed by the finale Sunday at 1 p.m. The audio broadcast with Russ Reneau will begin 15 minutes prior to the first pitch each day and can be heard on HBUHuskies.com and the Legacy Sports Network.

New Orleans 14, Jackson State 3
JACKSON, Miss. --  Daniel Martinez earned his first collegiate win, pitching a complete game as the New Orleans Privateers baseball team (14-29, 3-18) coasted to a 14-3 victory over the Jackson State Tigers (28-18, 14-7) on Tuesday at Braddy Field.
 
The Privateers fought back from an early deficit to tie the game in the fifth. After a lead-off single by Parker Jones, New Orleans had a bunt on with Chaz Boyer. The throw to first was wide and Boyer reached third while Jones scored to put the Privateers on the board. Ryan Calloway followed with an RBI sac fly to tie the game.
 
New Orleans took the lead in the sixth and never looked back. After the Privateers loaded up the bases against Theo Hassan, it got to Jones again who tripled down the left field line to put New Orleans up 5-2.Jay Robinson then executed a squeeze play to drive in another run against Hassan who took the loss (0-1).
 
The Privateers continued to pile onto the lead. Three runs came across in the seventh including a two-run home run by Jonathan Santana, his second of the season. Santana wound up going 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs.
 
Martinez gave up two early runs after a single and a walk set up a two-run single by Jovany Felipe. After that, Martinez locked in, striking out nine batters, a new career best. Martinez issued just one walk to 32 batters faced and struck out the side in the fifth. Five of the six Tigers hits on the evening came from the top three hitters in the order.
 
Matt Rykaczewski also had a game-high four hits in six at-bats and two runs scored. Sam Carriere went 3-for-6 with a run scored, his first since Apr. 10. Jones wound up with three hits and three RBIs including the go-ahead triple in the fifth.
 
Vincent Anthonia went five innings in a no decision and both runs surrendered were unearned. Melvin Rodriguez and Felipe had two hits each. Felipe drove in all three runs as he doubled home Rodriguez in the sixth.
 
The Privateers will take back to the road to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tulane 5, Southeastern Louisiana 4
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jacob Seward broke the Southeastern Louisiana hitting-streak record Tuesday, but it was not enough for the Lions as they fell, 5-4, to Tulane in 10 innings at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
 
Southeastern (33-13) rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs in the ninth, and took the lead in the 10th, but pinch hitter Tyler Wilson knocked a 2-run home run to give the Green Wave (28-16) the win in walk-off fashion.
 
Seward chopped an infield single to short with two outs in the third, extending his hitting streak to 23 games and bypassing former record holder Gavin Fingleson.
 
A tight game, Pat Cashman carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Tulane scratched across a run to take the lead. John Gandolfo singled up the up the middle with one out and came around to score on Lex Kaplan's two-out double to left-center field.
 
The Lions would come right back to tie the game. Kennon Menard led off the fifth with a single through the right side. Chris Eades knocked a one-out single up the middle and Ryan Byers followed with a walk to load the bases.
 
Green Wave starting pitcher Emerson Gibbs uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Menard to score from third with the tying run.
 
Tulane responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth, taking back the lead.
 
In the ninth, Kevin Carr led off the inning with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Drew Avans advanced to third base when Brett Hoffman snuck a double inside the bag at third. Kyle Cedotal pinch ran for Hoffman. Menard brought the Lions within one, driving in Avans with a grounder to shortstop.
 
The Green Wave went to the bullpen and pinch hitter Webb Bobo greeted reliever Corey Merrill with a single to left, driving home Cedotal with the tying run.
 
Reliever Tim Yandel hit Seward with a pitch leading off the 10th and he advanced to third on Carson Crites' single to right-center. The Lions took the lead when Seward scored from third on a passed ball.
 
Mac Sceroler (2-2) worked a scoreless eighth and ninth, but Tulane shortstop Stephen Alemais led off the final frame with a single to right and was aboard for Wilson's blast to left.
 
Eric Steel (2-0), the sixth and final pitcher used by Tulane, earned the win while Sceroler suffered the loss.
 
Menard (3-for-5) and Crites (2-for-5) led the Lions at the plate.
 
Southeastern returns to conference play Friday at 6 p.m. against Lamar in the opener of a three-game series. The Lions' magic number to clinch a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament is one – one win over the Cardinals will secure the defending Southland tournament champs a spot for the eighth-straight season.

Houston 3, Sam Houston State 0
HOUSTON, Texas – Cougar pitcher David Longville limited Sam Houston State to five hits as the University of Houston shut out the Bearkats 3-0 in a non-conference baseball contest Tuesday night at Cougar Field.
 
The Kats now stand 24-22 for the season while Houston upped its record to 30-15 for the year.
Third baseman Jake MacWilliam accounted for two of the Kats’ five hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Center fielder Colt Atwood added a double in the ninth inning and catcher Trevor Winne and designated hitter Wyatt Powell each produced a single.
 
Longville struck out four of the 31 batters he faced. Right fielder Travis Lee was the only Bearkat to reach third base after getting to first on an error and advancing to third on Atwood’s double with one out in the ninth.
 
Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings as the two teams combined to produce only three hits and five base runners.
 
Six pitchers took the mound for Sam Houston. Starter Alex Bisacca gave up only three hits in four-and-a-third innings while striking out five Cougars. Jordan Church, Hayden Nixon, Derrick Hadley, Reid Garrett and Ryan Brinley saw action in relief. Bisacca (5-2) was credited with the loss.
 
Houston scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Ian Rice led off the inning with a base on balls. With two outs, second baseman Josh Vidales walked and first baseman Chris Iriart was hit by a pitch. Designated player Jacob Campbell’s single through the left side scored both Rice and Vidales.
 
The Cougars added a third run in the seventh inning as Iriat and Campbell walked with two outs and left fielder Corey Julks singled to center field to score Iriart.
 
Houston totaled seven hits. The Bearkats left four runners on base while the Cougars stranded 11.
Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action Friday at 6:30 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first game of a Southland Conference weekend series at Don Sanders Stadium.
