PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team swept a doubleheader on the road at Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, 8-3 and 19-10 at the PVAMU Softball Field.

The two victories give the Cardinals (8-29) a season high four-game winning streak as they head into a Southland Conference home series this weekend against Nicholls State University.

In the first game, it was the Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) Show.  DuBois tossed a complete game in the circle to improve to 3-8 on the season.  She allowed eight hits, three runs and three walks while striking out five.  At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, a three-run homer and six runs batted in.  Her sixth inning home run gave the Cardinals the breathing room they needed.

UIW had 10 hits in the game and did not commit and error in the field.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) went 3-for-5 with three runs and a stolen base from her lead-off spot.  Monique Miller (Hewitt/Midway HS) scored twice in the game while Shelbi Swenson (Elgin/Elgin HS) had two hits and an RBI.

Monica Cartwright took the loss for the Panthers (5-19).  She allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and three walks in 7.0 innings of work.  Amanda Ford had two hits, a double and scored a run while Jalla Johnson drove in two runs.

In the second game, the Cardinals scored their most runs in a game since a 20-0 victory over Concordia-Texas on February 17, 1998.  The game was close for a long time.  The Panthers led 4-1 after one inning and then the Cardinals scored eight times in the second inning, but PVAMU scored four more times over the next two innings to make it 9-8 UIW after three innings.

The Cardinals tacked on a run in the fourth inning before putting the game away late.  They scored three times in the sixth inning and six times in the seventh inning.  UIW took advantage of eight errors by the Panthers and scored 12 unearned runs.

UIW pounded out 15 hits in the game, including a season high five home runs.  They hit two homers in the second inning, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.  Johnson got the Cardinals started at the top of the order going 2-for-5 with three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases.  She also extended her hitting streak to 15 games which is the longest for the team in over eight seasons.

DuBois kept her big day going with two more home runs and four RBI's giving her 10 runs batted in for the doubleheader.  Miller went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base and Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) drove in three while scoring twice.  In the 5-6-7 spots in the lineup, Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS), Swenson and Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) went a combined 7-for-12 with six runs, eight RBI's and three home runs.  Hebert also picked up the win with 4.1 innings of relief where she allowed five hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out three.

The Panthers also popped a pair of home runs in the game.  Jazmine Hicks hit one and drove in three runs while Destinee Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs and a homer.  Oliva Lacewell was handed the loss after giving up eight runs in 1.2 innings.

The Cardinals play Nicholls this weekend with a game on Friday at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cardinals Field.

Texas 11, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2 (5)
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas scored six runs in the first inning en route to an 11-2 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team on Tuesday, as the Longhorns earned their ninth straight victory. Cosette Hernandez went 3-for-3 and scored a run in a losing effort for the Islanders.

Devon Tunning went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and three RBI to lead the Longhorn offense, while Stephanie Ceo and Gabby Smith each had two hits and drove in a pair. Smith scattered seven hits and struck out five in collecting the win in the circle, while Liz Carter allowed nine runs and eight hits in three innings, though just four of the runs were earned, to pick up the loss.

Tunning led things off with a bang in the bottom of the first, sending an opposite-field home run to left on a 3-2 pitch to give the Longhorns an early 1-0 lead. After an error, Carter bounced back to get the next two hitters, but UT mounted a two-out rally. The Longhorns alternated walks and singles over the next four batters, and then Ceo capped it off with a two-run double to make it a 6-0 lead in favor of the home team.

After an RBI single by Holly Kern made it 7-0 in the bottom of the second, the Islanders responded with a two-spot in the top of the third. Hernandez led off the frame with a double, and Dani Tefft followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Carter put the first run of the game on the board with an RBI groundout, moving Tefft to second. Mickayla Cochran then drove Tefft home with a single to left to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

In the bottom of the third, Tunning came up with another big fly, this one with two outs and a runner on base to make it a 9-2 advantage for the home squad. Then in the fourth, the Longhorns used an infield single and two hit batters to load the bases on Katie Blanar, with Smith then knocking home a pair and pushing the advantage to 11-2.

The Islanders put a pair of runners on in the top of the fifth, but were unable to plate a run, and Texas emerged with the run-rule victory.

A&M-Corpus Christi is back in action this weekend for a crucial conference series at Chapman Field against Lamar. The Cardinals and Islanders will do battle with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday followed by the series finale at noon on Saturday. Live stats and video for all three games will be available on GoIslanders.com.

Texas Southern 6, Stephen F. Austin 4
HOUSTON, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team erased a four-run deficit thanks in part to the bat of Taylor LeFlore but the Ladyjacks couldn’t finish off Texas Southern on Tuesday night, falling 6-4 at Memorial Park. SFA drops to 11-26 this season with the loss.

Three Ladyjacks had multi-hit afternoons as Heather Hollingsworth and LeFlore each finished 2-for-3 at the dish while Lora Blackwell went a perfect 2-for-2. All three drew a walk in the game to reach base safely on three separate occasions.

The Lady Tigers (14-14) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs off three RBI singles in the first inning, but the Ladyjacks would chip away at the early lead with runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Taylor Vick opened the SFA scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field in the second, scoring LeFlore from third. Hollingsworth took advantage of a pickoff attempt at first base in the third inning to score a run and make it a 4-2 TSU lead.

In the fourth inning, LeFlore completed wiped away the Lady Tiger cushion with a big time two-run home run. Her first blast of the year evened the contest at 4-4 and put all of the momentum back on the purple and white side.

Texas Southern regained the lead with two runs in the fifth inning, however, as Chanier Powell and Gisella Paranich notched back-to-back RBI hits to put the Lady Tigers up 6-4.

Makayla Sikes was charged with the loss for SFA after tossing 4.2 frames. Callee Guffey closed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

TSU’s Jasmin Fulmore picked up the win after allowing four runs on eight hits and five walks over a complete seven innings.

The Ladyjacks return home for another game against a SWAC school on Wednesday afternoon when Prairie View A&M comes to town. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. out at SFA Softball Field.
