HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Five Lady Cardinals took their singles matches, three in straight sets, after they swept the doubles point and gave the Lamar women's team a 6-1 Southland Conference win over Sam Houston State at the McAdams Tennis Center on Thursday.
Lamar improved to 9-9 on the season and 3-5 in Southland Conference play, and SHSU fell to 2-12 on the year and 1-6 in league play.
Katya Lapayeva and Carolina Maso teamed up on court one and defeated Olivia Battye and Mila Milanovic 8-3 in doubles action. Andrea Ivanovic and Anna Spengler took down Karen Martinez and Bailey VanDyke 8-4 on line two, and Hanna Elfving and Stephanie Marchena notched an 8-5 win over Fabienne Gettwart and Maddie Mortimore from the third position.
Lapayeva and Maso have a team record of 6-4 and have won five in a row. Ivanovic and Spengler own a 7-4 mark and Eflving and Spengler improved to 5-4.
On No. 1 in singles action, Lapayeva defeated Gettwart in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. She improved her singles record 8-10 and has a three-match win streak. Anna Spengler won the first set 6-4 over Battye, and lost the second 6-4. Spengler took the match by default in the final frame.
Ivanoic improved her season mark to 8-10 with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Milanovic.
Maso had to battle back in her singles match on No. 4 after falling the first set in a tight 7-6 loss to Van Dyke. She came out in the second set and won 6-3 before closing the match with a super tiebreak win, 10-6. Maso improved to 10-6 this season, and is the first Lady Cardinal to notch double-digit wins on the season.
Marchena finished off Mortimore quickly with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win on line six. She improved her individual record to 9-4 this season.
Hanna Elfving fell on line five to Martinez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
The Lady Cardinals will finish the road portion of their schedule on Sunday morning when they travel to Abilene Christian for a 10 o'clock start time.

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Southeastern Louisiana freshmen Natalie Duran and freshmen Madina Vorotnikova won in both singles and doubles play to lead the Lions to a 4-3 victory over Morehead State in non-conference women’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Eagle Indoor Center.
SLU (11-6) closed out its non-conference schedule and clinched an overall winning record for the season. Morehead State dropped to 8-9 overall with the loss.
The Lions took the lead by taking the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, junior Renee Villarreal and freshman Lucia Bustamante (3-4) defeated the MSU pair of Andrea LeBlanc and Hayley Wild, 8-4. Duran and Vorotnikova (3-3) teamed for an 8-6 victory over Aleksandra Savic and Alex Tachovsky at No. 3 to give SLU a 1-0 lead.
Southeastern split the six singles matches with Morehead State, which won in straight sets on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts. At No. 3, sophomore Margaux Kaltenbacher (7-8) handled MSU’s Dominique McLean, 6-3, 6-1.
Vorontnikova (12-3) made short work of Wild at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-3. Duran (4-2) clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Aleksandra Savic on the No. 6 court.
At No. 1, Villarreal (15-1) saw her undefeated start to the spring come to an end. LeBlanc handed the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico native just the fifth loss of her singles career, winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-0. Villarreal is now 52-5 in her two-plus seasons as a Lion.
Southeastern will return to action next Tuesday, traveling to UNO for a 2 p.m. Southland Conference match.
