Lamar 3, Sam Houston State 2 (10)
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Stijn van der Meer was the thorn in Sam Houston’s side all weekend, and it showed when he scored the game’s go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning to give the Lamar baseball team a 3-2 win over the Bearkats on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium in Southland Conference action.

Sam Houston (28-26, 17-12 Southland Conference) took the day’s first game 4-1, which was a resumption in the sixth inning of Friday’s contest. Lamar finished their season on a nice note, and wrapped it up with a 21-31 overall record and 10-19 mark in league play.

The teams split the season-ending series after the third game was called because they ran out of time due to postponed contests.

Van der Meer opened the final inning with a single to center field, his seventh hit of the series in eight at-bats.

Jake Nash moved the junior short stop to second base with a sacrifice bunt, and van der Meer advanced to third on Brandon Provost’s single through the right side. Defensive entry Justin Eckols poked a 2-0 pitch into shallow left field and scored van der Meer for the 3-2 lead.

Cardinals struck first in the game on Kyle Markum’s sacrifice fly to center field that gave Nash a chance to score. Nash reached first with a leadoff single, took second on Provost’s single and advanced to third on a fly out from Kevin Santana.

They pushed it to 2-0 in the third inning on a RBI-single through the right side that scored Mason Salazar.  Salazar reached on his first hit of the weekend and took second on a walk to Reed Seeley.

The Kats tied the game with back-to-back doubles followed by a single in the eighth inning. Colt Atwood doubled to left center, which led to Cardinal starter Chase Angelle to get pulled from the contest.  Derek Wade took over on the mound and promptly allowed a double to Hayden Simerly.

Simerly advanced home on Tyler Winnie’s RBI single to right field.

Angelle pitched 7.1 innings and was in line for his sixth victory of the season, but was not able get it after the two-run eighth. The senior gave up seven hits and struck out six in his final game in a Lamar uniform.  Derek Wade was only able to record one out and surrendered one run two hits in his outing.

Jayson McKinley (3-3) earned the win out of the bullpen on two scoreless innings with just two hits given up.

The Cards scored their lone run of the first game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brendan Satran, who led off the frame with a single to right, scored on Seeley’s double down the left field line with one out.
Lamar left the bases loaded with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Van der Meer was a perfect 4-of-4 in the contest, all were singles.  Seeley, Satran and Kyle Markum accounted for LU’s other three hits.  The Cardinals struck out 12 times in the contest.

Danny Fernandez (4-4) was tagged with the loss on five innings of work with just one run allowed. He surrendered six hits and struck out one. Collin Chapman entered the game to start Saturday, which opened the sixth inning.
He finished the contest with three runs allowed and punched out one.

Andrew Godail (4-6) claimed the win on five innings, and also had his start interrupted with the rain on Saturday. He gave up three hits and struck out nine. Alex Bisacca (3) earned the save with four innings of work.  He allowed the lone LU run on four hits and three strikeouts.

Sam Houston State scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Miles Manning grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with Hayden Simerly at third base. Simerly scored on the play after he led off the inning with a single and moved to third base on back-to-back singles by Jake MacWilliam and Zach Smith.

The Bearkats quickly took advantage of the pitching change with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. MacWilliam and Spence Rahm scored on Smith’s double to right center, and the fourth and final run was in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run to left field from MacWilliam.

Nicholls 1, Northwestern State 0 (6)
NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team took a 1-0 lead over Northwestern State in the third inning before thunderstorms forced the game to end prematurely at C.C Stroud Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels (34-17-1, 18-11 SLC) actually took a 2-0 lead in the seventh after Seth Stevens doubled down the right field line and came home on a Justin Smith double to left center. With no outs and Smith on second, Nicholls looked to be in position to increase their lead over the Demons (30-21, 20-8 SLC) but a lightning delay resulted in a stoppage of play and the contest was eventually called as torrential downpours resulted in unplayable field conditions.

Because play was suspended in the middle of the seventh, the game reverted to the last complete inning, per NCAA rules.

The victory for Nicholls, coupled with McNeese State’s 2-1 series loss to Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State’s extra-inning loss to Lamar, means that the Colonels will enter the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 UCA. The Colonels and Bearkats will battle at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in the opening bout of the Southland Conference Tournament in Sugar Land, Texas.

The only official run for the Colonels on Saturday came in the third inning after David Zorn walked, advanced to second on a Joey Morales sacrifice bunt and came home when Justin Holt singled to left field.

Grant Borne (6-4) earned the win, allowing just one hit through two innings on the mound. Marc Frazier received his first save of the season, tossing two strikeouts and holding Northwestern State to just one hit through four innings of work.

Josh Oller (9-2) took the loss, surrendering a run on two hits while fanning two batters through three innings on the hill.

Holt led Nicholls at the plate with a 1-for-3 day and an RBI. Stevens and Smith both hit 1-for-2, and Morales went 1-for-1 in the win.

Caleb Dugas and David Fry were the only two Demons to register a hit the Demons.

Every game of the 2015 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament will be carried live by ESPN3. The event runs May 20-23 at Constellation Field, home of the Atlantic League's Sugar Land Skeeters.

McNeese State 7, Central Arkansas 1
CONWAY, Ark. – Senior outfielder Andrew Guillotte made history in Saturday afternoon’s regular season finale against Central Arkansas as he set McNeese State’s record for career hits with a two-RBI, base hit in the second inning to help lift the Cowboys to a 7-1 victory over the Bears.

Guillotte, who tied Charlie Kingrey’s eight-year record with a hit during Friday night’s contest, broke the mark with a two-out, two-RBI shot up the middle in the second inning. Guillotte, who leads the conference in hits this season, collected his 76th hit of the season on Saturday. He is just two hits shy of tying his 78-hit season from one year ago.

McNeese (32-23, 18-12 SLC) finished the season with a victory on the road and will now swing its momentum towards the 2015 Southland Conference Tournament at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas. The Pokes enter the postseason conference tournament as the fourth seed and will meet up with fifth-seeded Sam Houston State Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

The Cowboys snapped a seven-game losing skid in the series against UCA. McNeese also picked up its fourth win out of its last five league games and won a league game on the road for the first time since March 28.

Guillotte’s two-RBI hit helped spark an offensive attack against the Bears in the second frame. After taking a two run lead with two outs, freshman Joe Provenzano and junior Billy Sommers tacked on three more runs in the inning to help McNeese climb out to an early 5-0 lead.

McNeese starter Ethan Stremmel (5-4) earned the win after five spectacular innings on the mound, holding the Bears to just one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The Cowboy bullpen combined to throw the last four innings and shut out the Bears while only having surrendered just one hit. Seniors Cole Prejean and Cory LaPeze along with sophomore closer Collin Kober fanned eight batters in the process.

Riley Echols (3-4) was charged with the loss for Central Arkansas, after giving up five runs on four hits and two walks in a 1.2-inning start. Brad Hagerla pitched the majority of the game for the Bears, allowing no runs on just one hit before an apparent injury took him out of the game.

Notable offensive performances for the Cowboys came from Sommers, who finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, and senior James Cantu, who posted his 17th multiple-hit session on the year along with a run scored.

Connor Crane collected his 16th multi-game of the season as he batted 2-for-5 with an RBI while Provenzano logged a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

A two-out single to the outfield allowed UCA to cut into the lead during the fifth inning that made the score 5-1.

McNeese tacked on a pair of insurance runs to take control of the game. In the eighth inning, junior Lewis Guilbeau added to his outstanding weekend on the diamond as he slid home on a wild pitch to make it a 6-1 ballgame.

Matt Gallier’s sacrifice fly gave way to another run in the top of the final inning that allowed Lloyd to reach home and extend the lead to six runs over the Bears.
