Sam Houston State 1, Louisiana-Lafayette 0
LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Sam Houston State Bearkats soccer program got off to the right start Friday, downing Louisiana-Lafayette, 1-0 at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer Complex, in the process, lifting eighth-year head coach Tom Brown to his 200th career victory.
“I appreciate the kind thoughts from Bearkat Nation,” Brown said. “A lot of players and staff have worked hard to help me reach this milestone. I really enjoy getting up each day and using soccer to work with young people and I hope that I positively impact their life in some way.”
Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Schwartz equaled her goal total from the entire 2014 season with a sliding shot at the top of the box in the 56th minute, breaking the stalemate, helped by a nice delivery from junior midfielder Megan Bennett.
“We’re very happy to get the win tonight,” Brown said. “Louisiana-Lafayette played very hard and pressed us all over the field. We feel that we did not play very well but I think that says a lot that we were able to earn a win.”
The Bearkats (1-0) were outshot 17-8 by the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-1), a complete 180 from last year’s opener between the two clubs that featured Sam Houston out-firing Louisiana-Lafayette, 28-5 but falling 1-0.
In the box, Sam Houston senior goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton recorded her 18th career shutout, notching five saves, including a big one late to secure the win.
The Bearkats have won nine of their last 12 games dating to the squad’s 4-1 victory against UIW on Sept. 21 last season.
Sam Houston returns to action Sunday with a 7 p.m. visit to UTSA.

Southeastern Louisiana 2, Jackson State 0
HAMMOND, La.
– The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Jackson State in the season opener for both team Friday night at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
Senior Kayla Vera and junior Marisa Rodrigues each found the net for SLU (1-0). The Lady Lions finished with a 21-3 shot advantage over the Lady Tigers (0-1), but countless near misses kept a scrappy JSU squad in the match throughout.
Junior Hope Sabadash earned the shutout in net for the Lady Lions. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native finished with three saves. Sophomore Maggie Ramsey, sophomore Ana Zadro and senior Gisenia Utreras each were credited with assists.
“In the first 10 minutes, we had a half dozen chances and we were able to finish one,” Hornbuckle said. “If we finish another one early, it changes the dynamic of the game. We came out very strong and moved the ball consistently.”
Hornbuckle was quick to praise several individuals for Friday’s efforts.
“Gisenia was very good in the midfield for us,” Hornbuckle commented. “She was very dynamic and did a great job switching the field for us. Maggie was dominant in the air and Hope was extremely organized in goal. (Freshman) Sofia Olsson was a consistent presence for us up top and (freshman) Christina Cutura played with energy and gave us a spark when she was inserted along the back line.”
Southeastern created six shots and four corner kicks before opening up the scoring in the eighth minute. Ramsey won a ball around midfield and played it ahead to Zadro, who found Vera open. The Vancouver, Washington native put the ball in the upper left corner of the net to give Southeastern a 1-0 lead.
Despite going into the break with a 12-3 shot advantage, Southeastern could not increase its lead. The Lady Lions had several near misses and JSU goalkeeper Kylie Christian made a couple of diving saves.
SLU came out aggressively in the opening minutes of the second half. Ramsey had a shot hit the post, while junior Bri Singh and Olsson also had close calls.
Utreras helped create the second and final goal of the match in the 77th minute. The Brampton, Ontario, Canada ripped a shot off the cross bar and Rodrigues was right there to score off the rebound to provide the final 2-0 margin.
Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday, opening the road portion of its schedule with a 3 p.m. match at Mississippi Valley State.

Northwestern State 4, LSU-Alexandria 1
NATCHITOCHES, Texas – Four first-half goals, including a pair scored on the first career shots by a pair of freshmen, lifted Northwestern State to a 4-1 season-opening women’s soccer victory Friday night at the Demon Soccer Complex.
Brittany Caserma, making her collegiate debut, wasted no time finding the back of the net. Caserma took a looping pass from Shelby Drope and dropped it in on her first collegiate shot, giving NSU a 1-0 lead just 110 seconds into the season.
Northwestern State (1-0) then capitalized on a couple of rebounds to extend its margin to 3-0 just past the midway point of the first half.
Sophomore Cache Haley was the first to score off a rebound, beating LSUA (0-1) keeper Katie Duffey at in the 13th minute. Freshman Kayleigh Phillips added another rebound goal in the 25
th minute, following Duffey’s stop of an Esdeina Gonzalez shot. By virtue of the goal, Phillips matched her classmate Caserma by scoring on her first career shot.
Phillips had a hand in what turned out to be NSU’s final goal of the match, setting up Camila Ardila for a goal in the 36th minute. Ardila took Phillips’ pass and beat Duffey by tucking a shot inside the lower left post for a 4-0 lead.
The visiting Generals tightened things up in the second half, keeping Northwestern State off the scoreboard and pulled within three on Linae Harada’s goal in the 64th minute.

UIW 1, UT-Rio Grande Valley 0 (2OT)
EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team got the 2015 season started on the right foot, literally. Junior Abigail Koenigs' magic right foot slotted home the golden goal with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period to give the Cardinals a 1-0 win at UT-Rio Grande Valley on Friday night.
The Cardinals (1-0) pushed hard in the final few minutes of the contest. Freshman Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS) had a shot blocked that led to a corner kick. Freshman Emily Halal nearly converted, but her shot was saved by Erica Gonzalez to set up another corner kick. Megan Baker served up another corner kick that went through the box and Halal ran the ball down in the corner before it went out of bounds. She was able to serve the ball back into the mixer where Koenigs connected on a low bouncer that scooted into the lower right corner of the goal.
"I am so incredibly proud of this group," said UIW head coach Anne Felts after the game. "They have been working so hard, and more importantly they have really come together as a team. Houston Baptist 1, Texas Southern 0
HOUSTON, Texas – Houston Baptist women’s soccer began the 2015 season the same way it ended the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament: with a shutout win. The Huskies christened the new season with a 1-0 victory over Texas Southern Friday evening at Awty International School.
“I was pleased with our tenacity,” said HBU head coach Misty Jones. “The ladies battled hard and Gabby had a great goal.”

The match was delayed an hour and 40 minutes due to rain and lightning, but once the match started, HBU took offensive control, outshooting the Lady Tigers, 8-1, and 5-1 in shots on goal. But despite the offensive pressure, the match was scoreless entering halftime.
HBU got on the board in the 62nd minute, as Abendschein fed Rodriguez, who streaked up the left side and beat Hernandez far side for a 1-0 Huskies lead.
About 15 minutes later, Turner made a spectacular save, as, despite facing two Lady Tigers alone in front, she challenged the ball dribbler and TSU was not able to get a shot off.
HBU outshot TSU, 9-3, in the second half and 17-4 in the match. The Huskies also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
HBU hosts Texas State Sunday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m., tentatively scheduled to be played at Sorrels Field. Check back to HBUHuskies.com to site location updates.

Arkansas 4, Stephen F. Austin 1
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team put a lot of positive things together in its 2015 season opener, but a pair of Arkansas goals early in the second half proved to be the difference in a 4-1 Razorback win on Friday night.
Ashton Norman scored the first goal of the season for SFA in the 87th minute, in what was a beautiful build up and finish in front of the net. Kelly Ann Craig collected a cross from Crystal Calvit near the right corner of the box and fired a shot at the far post. Razorback goalkeeper Cameron Carter was able to get a hand on Craig’s shot but Norman was right there to drill the rebound into the right netting.
Rachel Owens started the scoring play for the Ladyjacks by beating her man down the left sideline, composing herself in the box and laying off a ball to Calvit. Craig was credited with her second career assist while Norman’s goal marks the sixth of her career.
The Razorbacks created several scoring chances early in the opening half, but the Ladyjack back line held strong for the first 34 minutes. Arkansas finally broke through with a goal in the 35th minute off a corner kick. Claire Kelley poked it in after a scramble in the box.
Shortly after the opening goal, freshman Breanna Moore created SFA’s best scoring chance of the half. The forward broke free down the middle of the field but had a shot blocked just inside the penalty area.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Hogs heading into the break. Redshirt sophomore keeper Lillie Ehlert kept SFA in the game with big plays between the pipes. She collected four saves overall in 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, Arkansas made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal by Reece Christopherson in the 54th minute. Gabriella DeLeon finished the scoring for the Razorbacks with two goals off headers in the 62nd and 71st minutes.
The Ladyjacks got great looks over the final 10 minutes, with Norman and Hailey Hunt each getting shots off down the stretch. Michaela Mencacci rolled a ball back to Hunt at the top of the 18 in the 82nd minute where Hunt sent a missile that screamed wide left. Norman got another shot on frame in the closing seconds after Mencacci played a square ball to her in the same location.

San Jose State 3, Lamar 0
BEAUMONT, Texas – The inexperience of the Lamar University women's soccer team showed Friday night in a 3-0 loss to visiting San Jose State in the season opener for both teams.
The Cardinals started five sophomores and two freshmen Friday as LU dropped the season opener for the first time in three years. San Jose State got a bit of revenge after dropping its season opener to a visiting LU squad by a 1-0 count last season.
"This is something we have to learn from," LU coach Orlando Cervantes said after the loss. "We have to be mentally tougher. We can't play with fear. When something goes wrong we have to learn to fight back."
San Jose State got on the board at the 13:54 mark of the first half when Samantha Orodpour scored an unassisted goal after a scramble in front of LU goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy, who was making her first career start.
"I thought we played a good first half," Cervantes said. "We stayed within our game plan and did some good things."
San Jose State boosted its lead to 2-0 just 4:24 into the second half when Darlene Rodriguez fired a shot past Lovejoy. That goal gave added momentum to the Spartans.
"The minute that second goal went in, we didn't fight back," Cervantes said. "We didn't counter attack. We let them take the game to us."
The Spartans added an insurance goal with 13:16 left remaining when Claire Berkley converted a corner kick off the foot of Carly McBeath.
"We did a bad job of defending there," Cervantes said. "That was a weak goal that we should not have allowed."
Lovejoy made 10 saves for LU. Zoe Makrigiannis made two saves over the first 80 minutes for San Jose State before giving way to Paige Simoneau as the duo shared the shutout.
LU was outshot 20-7 for the game. Mari Olastuen had two shots for the Cardinals.
LU doesn't have much time to regroup. The Cardinals hit the road Saturday afternoon to make the trek to Ruston, La., for a showdown with Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. Sunday. The team will practice Saturday evening at Louisiana Tech.
"That will be another tough game for us," Cervantes said. "But we didn't schedule easy teams just to get wins. We scheduled teams that will help us get better. We just have to learn from this and show improvement."
Following Sunday's game at Louisiana Tech, the Cardinals return home for a pair of games next weekend. Texas Southern comes to town at 7 p.m. Aug. 28, while LSU-Alexandria visits the LU Soccer Complex at 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at UNLV
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opened the 2015 season at the Las Vegas Invitational against UNLV, falling to the Rebels 1-0. The Islanders began with a slow start in the first half, before taking control of the game in the second half.
"I think it was a tale of two halves tonight," head coach Shanna Caldwell said after the match. "The first half, I think our excitement for the game turned to a little anxious energy. We had a lot of our unforced turnovers in our half that resulted in too many chances for UNLV. A quality team will always capitalize on those chances.
"The second half, I thought the fight was there," added Caldwell. "We played hard and we played together and we didn't quit fighting. I think we have a lot to build on moving into Sunday's game and I'm looking forward to seeing the team respond."
Both teams took the opening 15 minutes to acclimate to regular-season soccer. The Islanders faced pressure early from the Rebels, as keeper Megan Delaney was called into action twice within the first minute, producing fine saves on each occasion.
The Islanders' backline halted several Rebel attacks, before sending the ball up to the forwards to create offensive opportunities. In the 17th minute, Yvette Franco forced UNLV goalkeeper Jordan Sallee into a diving effort to keep the ball out of the net.
The Rebels broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Dakota Blazak flicked on a throw-in, which found Susie Bernal six yards away from goal. The junior placed her shot in the far left corner just past the reaching arms of Delaney.
A&M-Corpus Christi picked up the pressure on the UNLV towards the end of the first half, as Franco and Kallyn Redona disrupted the midfield play of the Rebels. The first 45 minutes ended with the hosts leading 1-0.
The game resumed after the break with the visitors adding more pressure to the UNLV defense. The Islanders generated several offensive chances through set pieces in the second half.
Jessica Berdan sent a lofted ball over the wall and just over the head of the streaking Brooke Erdmann in the 71st minute. The Islanders' best chance came from a Delaney free kick. The Las Vegas native stood over the ball just inside the midfield line and drove it into the box, where Berdan's header just missed the far post.
The final 10 minutes of the match saw a flurry of chances for the Islanders. Franco, Erdmann and Nanna Poulsen created several chances for A&M-Corpus Christi. A final attack with 10 seconds remaining saw Poulsen's shot deflected wide of the goal.
Delaney finished with 10 saves on the evening. Erdmann and Franco led the Islanders offensively with two shots each. Freshman Tatum Printy recorded her first career shot on target in the match.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be back in action on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT (10:30 a.m. PT) against Southern Utah, as a part of the Las Vegas Invitational. Live stats are available through GoIslanders.com and live updates will be posted on Twitter (@IslandersSoccer).
