Lamar 13, Alcorn State 0
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team turned in a record-breaking offensive performance in a 13-0 win over visiting Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon.

In a gorgeous day under an electric blue sky at the LU Soccer Complex, the Cardinals (4-4-0) set program records for goals in a game, goals in a half (eight) and points (36) while tying the school record with 10 assists. Patricia Lauritzen tied a school record with three goals, all of those coming in the second half.

“It’s the kind of game we expected,” LU coach Orlando Cervantes said. “Alcorn is a rebuilding program under a new coach. “Our goal was to sharpen our play heading into conference play next week. We wanted to build our confidence and give some of our reserves a chance to show what they can do.

Alcorn State (0-3-0) started the game with 11 players, finishing with nine after a pair of first-half injuries. Cervantes used liberal substitutions and finished the game with 10 players on the field in an effort to keep the contest competitive.

“Give Alcorn State credit. They never quit. That is the most mentally tough team I’ve seen,” Cervantes said. “That’s a lesson we can take away from this game. They fought to the very end.”

It didn’t take long for the Cardinals to get on the board, as Jordan Mulnix scored just 119 seconds into the game, scoring from in front of the goal after a beautiful setup from Mari Olastuen and Alexis Aviles. Morgan Burden and Mulnix scored after that to make it 3-0 just 8:11 into the game, ending most of the suspense. Mulnix’s goal that made it 3-0 was the 200th goal in the history of the LU program that started in 2007.

Aviles had two goals and an assist for LU, while Mulnix finished with two goals. Morgan Burden, Mari Olastuen, Ana Moreno and Dayna Doizé each had a goal and an assist. Megan Campbell and M.J. Eckart also scored for LU.

The Cardinals led 8-0 at halftime, which was more than enough support for LU goalkeepers Lauren Lovejoy and Lauren Bond, who combined for their third shared shutout of the season. Lovejoy started and earned the win, making three saves in her 38:24 of action before giving way to Bond, who made two saves the rest of the way.

“I was very happy with the way our defense played, especially in the second half,” Cervantes said. “That was something we concentrated on after halftime.”

For the game, the Cardinals held a 30-12 advantage in shots, including a 16-5 edge in shots on goal.

Tristan Smith made three saves for Alcorn State.

The Cardinals have scored 30 goals this season, the third-most in school history, behind the 41 scored in 2012, Cervantes’ first season at LU, and the 36 scored in 2011.

“We have the offensive talent,” Cervantes said. “We have a lot of freshmen who are still learning what it takes to be successful at the Division I level. They’re getting better all the time.”

LU hosts Nicholls at 7 p.m. Friday in the Southland Conference opener for both schools before closing out the non-conference portion of the schedule at Texas State at 1 p.m. Sept. 20.

Southeastern Louisiana 6, Texas Southern 0
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team closed out non-conference play on a high note with a 6-0 victory over Texas Southern in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-1-1) scored early and often on the way to its most lopsided victory of the season. Texas Southern fell to 1-5 overall with the loss.

“We pleased with our overall performance today,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “We kept possession, opened up the field and connected passes.”

Leading the way offensively for Southeastern was sophomore Maggie Ramsey, who finished with two first-half goals. Senior Gisenia Utreras, junior Bri Singh, junior Marisa Rodrigues and freshman Christina Cutura also found the net.

Freshman Sofia Olsson was credited with two assists. Utreras, freshman Vanessa Arzaluz and sophomore Ana Zadro each had assists for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lion back line of Cutura, junior Katie Noonan, senior Maddie Allen and sophomore Maddie Kresevic held TSU to just six shots. Junior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash collected three saves on the way to her fourth shutout of the season.

“Katie stabilized our back line and was able to cut out some opportunities,” Hornbuckle said. “Gisenia was again an engine in the middle of the field, creating opportunities and connecting passes. Hope was very good with her distribution and decision making today.

“Maggie was fantastic in front of the goal and hit two great shots,” Hornbuckle added. “Ana was also very good with her decision making and spreading the ball around. Maddie Kresevic continues to do a nice job getting us into the attack and consistently winning balls.”

Southeastern had several near misses early before taking the lead for good in the 25th minute. Olsson and Ramsey both had open looks in front of the Lady Tiger net. Olsson tapped it to Ramsey and the Mission Viejo, California native blasted a shot into the back of the net.

The Lady Lions doubled their lead less than five minutes later. Utreras was taken down from behind by a TSU defender and the Brampton, Ontario, Canada native netted the resulting penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 SLU lead.

Utreras played a part in the Lady Lions’ next goal in the 35th minute. She played a cross from the right side that Ramsey sent past TSU goalkeeper Liliana Hernandez for a 3-0 advantage.

Singh closed out the first half scoring in the 41st minute. Arzaluz played a ball ahead to the Lancaster, California native, who sent Southeastern into the break with a 4-0 cushion.

Rodrigues padded the lead early in the second half, scoring off a feed from Olsson. Cutura capped the scoring in the 73rd minute, as Zadro placed a corner kick on frame that the Pearl River, Louisiana native headed in to provide the final 6-0 margin.

Southeastern will open Southland Conference play on Friday, traveling to McNeese State for a 7 p.m. match in Lake Charles.

“As we enter conference play, we need to continue to have continuity with what we’re doing on both sides of the ball,” Hornbuckle said. “We have to continue to improve on set pieces.”

Central Arkansas 5, Mississippi Valley State 2
CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women’s soccer team took the field for a final tune-up before Southland Conference play begins next weekend, hosting the Mississippi Valley State Devilletes at the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex. The Bears got a hat-trick from Shelby Wilson, along with goals from Camille Bassett and Dayna Mounie, downing the Devilettes 5-2.

Central Arkansas (3-5) dominated possession all day, but was unable to find a goal until the 34th minute, when Alex Moore played ball across the MVSU box to Mounie, who tapped it in from three yards out for her first goal of the season. “We did a great job of getting in, getting around the corner, and getting a good cross in,” said Central Arkansas head coach Jeremy Bishop.

The Bears came out of the halftime break on fire, as Wilson fielded a deflection of Ashley Smith’s shot and put it away from six yards out to make the UCA lead 2-0 in the 47th minute.

Just two minutes later, Jessica Pantuso played a ball forward to Wilson, who took a pair of dribbles and fired a rocket from 22-yards out for her second goal of the day.

In the 58th minute, Bassett picked up her first collegiate goal, gathering a pass from MaKayla Wilson and dribbling into the box, where she fired just inside the back post to push the Central Arkansas lead to 4-0.

“Coming in and when we were recruiting her, we thought that Cami could be a goal-scorer for us,” said Bishop. “On that goal she showed a lot of the things that we think she can do; good pace and good finish. She’s had some good opportunities this season, I think she hit the bar on Friday night, but she hasn’t been able to get them in so far.”

Wilson completed the hat trick in the 61st minute, when she received a pass from Smith and beat the keeper to the near post. “That’s a special mark to get three in a game,” said Bishop. “Really all season long Shelby has been doing a good job of putting herself in and giving herself good scoring chance, and today she was able to put them away.”

MVSU (2-5) got late from Nykosi Simmons and Mariana Balbao, but could not pull closer than 5-2.
“We definitely wanted on the winning side of things today, and thought that it was a decent chance for us to do that,” said Bishop, “but I would have liked for us to have done it sooner, as far as getting the ball in the net. But it was good that we got it going in the second half and found ways to put the ball away.”

Central Arkansas took 26 shots on the day, putting 13 of them on frame. Wilson led the attack with four shots on goal, while Smith and Bassett each added three shots on target. In goal for the Bears, Anna Hughes made five saves in 68 minutes, while Sarah Mayorga allowed a pair of goals and made one save over the remaining 22 minutes.

The Bears open SLC play on the road next weekend, travelling to Huntsville, Texas for a matchup against Sam Houston State on Friday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. “A lot of people are expecting Sam Houston to do well in conference play this year,” said Bishop. “Road games are tough anyway, and their even tougher in conference play, so we’ll have to come ready to play.”

Sam Houston State 4, Prairie View A&M 0
Sam Houston State closed out non-conference play in style on Sunday night as Mariah Titus netted a pair of goals and the Bearkats poured on 23 shots in route to a 4-0 victory against Prairie View A&M from the Panthers Soccer Complex.

The four goals marked a season high for the Bearkats (3-3-1), who picked up their first victory since the squad’s match against UTSA on Aug. 23. The win also ends a stretch of six road trips in seven matches for Sam Houston.

“I thought we put together an overall good game tonight,” eighth-year head coach Tom Brown said. “We started a few different players so we could get an extended look at them.”

In total, 20 Bearkats saw action with nine separate players taking shots, including four from senior Katie Ferrara and Titus and three from freshman Lindsey Bienski, freshman Meredith Carlson and junior Madison Cannon.

Cannon, a transfer from Central Florida, scored her first goal in the orange and white just nine minutes in, putting a pass from junior Jordan Jarzombek into the top right corner from eight yards out.

In the 32nd minute, Titus secured a ball off a rebound from five yards out and put it in the back of the net. The shot was one of nine in the first period for Sam Houston, who held the Panthers (2-3-1) to four in the first half and nine in the game.

In the 65th minute, Ferrara logged her first goal of the season, arching a shot from 44 yards out just under the crossbar, helped by freshman Bailey Strong’s first collegiate assist.

Titus added the Kats final goal of the day in the 89th minute, utilizing a free kick and putting a shot through Prairie View A&M goalkeeper Dominique Dillon’s hands. The 13th-career goal ranks Titus eighth in Sam Houston history.

Senior Magen Ross earned her second start of the season in the net for Sam Houston, logging five saves while epitomizing a tenacious defensive effort for the Kats. The win was the fourth career and second this season for the transfer from Texas State.

Sam Houston takes on Central Arkansas on Friday at 6:30 p.m. from Pritchett Field. The match will be the Kats’ second “Free Food Friday,” with catered Wingstop available for the first 100 students in attendance with an active Bearkat OneCard.

Houston Baptist 0, UT-Rio Grande Valley 0 (2OT)
EDINBURG, Texas – HBU led all statistical categories, but could not get one past the keeper, as the Huskies and UT Rio Grande Valley played to a 0-0 double overtime tie Sunday on the final day of the UTRGV Invitational.

“It was certainly a day that we dominated play,” said HBU head coach Misty Jones. “We knocked the ball around and created numerous chances. We got a bit unlucky [as we] hit the cross bar twice and they cleared one off the line. We have to be more clinical in our finishing.”

HBU (2-2-1) outshot the Vaqueros, 22-5, 12-2 in shot on goals, and had six of the match’s seven corner kicks. Allison Abendschein took a match high six shots, while Ellee Hall had four shots, with all hitting the target. Blake Martin had a trio of shots with two reaching the keeper. Katie Turner stopped two shots for her second shutout of the season as she set a new career high in minutes played.

Meghan Oram took a team-best two shots for UTRGV (2-2-3), who had played 97 minutes in an overtime win over South Dakota less than 24 hours ago. Maria Eriksen stopped 11 shots on a busy day, with one team save.

The Vaqueros had an opportunity seven minutes into the match, as Turner stopped a shot by Marcela Ramirez. Another shot was blocked, resulting in a corner kick. On the ensuing free kick, Turner made a save on a Zinnia Harring scoring chance.

Nine minutes later, Abendschein hit the cross bar, coming inches close to giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

In the 39th minute, Elizabeth Adams took a corner for the Huskies and Martin’s shot attempt was stopped by a Vaquero defender for a team save. The ball went back to Martin, but Eriksen made the save. The Huskies maintained the pressure, as Alessia Dal Monte hit the cross bar, and Eriksen stopped both Jia LeBlanc’s and Jessa LeBlanc’s shot attempts as the opening half came to a close.

HBU outshot UTRGV, 11-3, in the first half, while each team had a corner kick.

The Huskies took all eight of the second half’s shots, but could not get one past Eriksen. In the 85th minute, HBU’s best chance of the half came on a Baylii Bieke header attempt, but Eriksen challenged the play and made the play.

HBU outshot the Vaqueros, 3-2, in the overtime periods. A cross pass to Abendschein late in the first OT was the Huskies’ best opportunity in the extra sessions, but Abendschein’s shot went just wide.

HBU begins Southland Conference play at Incarnate Word Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. After road games at Sam Houston State (9/25, 6:30 pm) and Stephen F. Austin (9/27, 1 p.m.), the Huskies return home Homecoming Weekend Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana.

Texas 2, Abilene Christian 1
AUSTIN, Texas - Abilene Christian soccer closed out its ultra-tough non-conference schedule Sunday with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Junior goalkeeper Sydney Newton once again was simply sensational in net, making 11 saves, but had to leave the Longhorn Network-televised match early after colliding with the post.

Newton was injured trying to keep the match scoreless at the start of the 70th minute when Lindsey Meyer headed in a Julia Dyche free kick from about seven-yards away. The goal was Meyer's second of the season.

Thankfully for the Wildcats, Newton was smiling as she left the pitch on her own strength and hopefully she'll be ready to go for Friday's home Southland Conference opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi after getting stitched up.

But with junior goalkeeper Kelsey Dombrowski also on the bench with an injury that's kept her out of the past three matches, the Wildcats had to turn to freshman Madeline Grimes who was immediately tested in her collegiate debut as she surrendered the game-winning goal 1:39 after entering.

UT's second strike was set up by Kelsey Shimmick who shook off a pair of Wildcat defenders near the left corner of the 18-yard box before crossing in a crisp pass to Mikayla Flores, who booted it in five-yards back of the right post.

Flores' game-winner was her first goal of the season.

Seven minutes later the Wildcats hit paydirt when freshman Sophie Standifer took advantage of a turnover in the defensive end and beat UT goalkeeper Abby Smith for her second goal of the season, both of which have come at Myers Stadium.

Standifer scored her first goal here in a 5-3 win over UTSA on Aug. 28.

Afterward neither side took another shot as Texas employed a corners' defense to help kill the clock and keep the Wildcats' shot total at nine. ACU (1-6-1) put six of those attempts on frame led by Standifer with three. Senior Lindsey Jones was second with two shots, while three of their teammates finished with one.

Smith collected five saves as UT improved to 3-2-2.

"We played a solid game today," said head coach Casey Wilson. " The coaching staff is pleased with how we responsed after Friday's match (at TCU). It was a great team effort and I liked how our center midfielders played with composure. Kelsie (Roberts) and Chantal (Kinsey) also played great, as they have all year, and I think our schedule has been a constant reminder to keep the bar high."

Newton, much like she was last Sunday night at No. 3 Texas A&M, was an absolute acrobat in between the pipes and drew a number of compliments from the Longhorn Network broadcasters.

One of Newton's best moments came during the closing minutes of the first half as she stopped two shots and fended off a pair of corner kicks in the 43rd minute. Following a corner by Chantale Campbell, Newton dove forward to stop a header at the near post by Jasmine Hart.

On the ensuing corner kick, the defense blocked a shot taken by Flores and then Newton came up with a big save against Katie Glenn.

Newton also greatly impressed during a sequence in the 32nd minute as she and her defense stopped four shots taken in a 26-second window. The Mansfield, Texas, native hit the ground while saving a blast by Flores. Her defense then put up another block, giving Newton just enough time to reach her feet and another of Glenn's five shots.

Texas outshot ACU for the match 26-9 and held a 17-5 advantage after the first half.

Glenn and Dyche shared the team lead with five shots and Flores had four, three of which were on frame.

SMU 3, Northwestern State 0
DALLAS, Texas – After Northwestern State tied LSU earlier this season by pressing forward to find the equalizing goal, coach George Van Linder said he didn’t have any hesitations employing the same strategy Sunday at Southern Methodist.

Trailing by one goal with 10 minutes remaining, NSU’s aggressiveness led to two late SMU goals as the Mustangs ran away with the 3-0 win.

The Lady Demons (3-4-1) controlled possession at times against the Mustangs, and Van Linder said he’s proud of the competitiveness of his bunch as they prepare for Southland Conference play Friday at Stephen F. Austin.

“I’m really proud of the team, and they stuck to the game plan and did well,” said Van Linder, who coached at SMU, leading the program to three NCAA tournament appearances. “It was my decision to take the gamble … it’s just not our mentality to sit there and take a 1-0 loss.

“It was unfortunate because we didn’t get the results we wanted.”

Claire Oates scored the Mustangs (3-3-2) first goal off a Lauren Guerra corner kick in the 23rd minute. The towering Oates received the corner kick to the back post and headed the ball in for a 1-0 edge.

NSU controlled possession for the majority of the match before Oates’ goal, and NSU’s best chance at a goal game several minutes later.

Junior midfielder Camila Ardila attempted a free kick from the left side of the penalty box, bending her shot off the far post.

SMU had a 20-5 shot advantage in the match, but Van Linder said he’s happy with how his defense held throughout the match. Junior Patry Carrion and sophomore Allison Palomo led that effort with an abundance of tackles and deflections.

“We were able to knock it around against a team that had a good game plan and do a lot of good things,” Van Linder said. “At halftime we thought we could win it, and with 20 minutes left, we thought (the equalizer) would come.

“We competed well today.”

SMU’s Vanessa Valadez scored her third and fourth goals of the season to push the Mustangs’ lead to 3-0.

The Mustangs controlled an Alex Latham goal kick to start an attack, and Blaire Thorpe crossed to Valadez for her first goal Sunday.

Valadez had another fastbreak opportunity two minutes, scoring off a Paige Jacobs assist.

NSU sophomore Sage Leffew, who started every match in 2014, logged her first official minutes of the season after recovering from an MCL sprain.

Leffew said she felt comfortable back on the pitch.

“It felt great being able to be with all the girls again,” Leffew said. “The knee felt great, couldn’t be any better.

“I had some contact, and everything went smooth as butter. I hope it stays that way.”

NSU forward Cache’ Haley traveled but didn’t play Sunday. Van Linder hopes to have her back early in the conference season.

Playing at SMU was a treat for all the Lady Demons but particularly for senior Cassandra Briscoe. Briscoe, who said she’s obsessed with Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi, said she felt his presence on the field after the Argentinians practiced at SMU’s Wescott Field this past week. Argentina played matches in Houston, Texas this past week.

Houston 4, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team lost at Houston on Sunday afternoon 4-0. The Islanders trailed 1-0 at halftime, but three second half goals for the Cougars was too much for the Islanders to overcome in their final non-conference match.

"There are a lot good things that came out of the game today," said head coach Shanna Caldwell. "We tried a couple of players in some different roles, and they had positive responses to the challenge. We had some great early pressure and possession that we weren't able to capitalize on, and then a quick turnover that Houston pounced on and converted gave them an energy lift.

"Conference starts next week and it's a clean slate for us," Caldwell added. "We need to keep our heads up and know that the little mistakes are correctable. We control our fate with this fresh start. We have to keep the energy high, and we know that we are very capable of doing that."

Goalkeeper Megan Delaney made a double-save in the 11th minute for the Islanders to keep the game level. The Cougars had a forward played in on goal, but the Las Vegas native denied a shot on the ground, before collecting another shot from the rebound. We control our fate with this fresh start. We have to keep the energy high, and we are very capable of that."

The Islanders switched to the attack in the 13th minute, when Hailey Sutton's shot found the side netting from the right side of the box. Nanna Poulsen forced Cougar goalkeeper Jordan Brown to charge off her line to clear, after the Danish international beat her marker and was in on goal in the 16th.

Lexa Green put the hosts ahead in the 24th minute, the senior received a pass from Tiffani Echeverria on the right side of the box and finished past a diving Delaney.

Throughout the first half, Delaney and Jessica Berdan sent long free kicks into the box that created trouble for the Cougar backline, but the Islanders were unable to convert the chances into goals. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the hosts when the teams entered the halftime break.

Six minutes into the second half, Houston picked up their second goal of the match from Vanessa Almaguer. The sophomore found the top-left corner of the goal with a shot from outside the box.

In the 63rd minute, Gabrielle Rodriguez crossed the ball into the box for Houston. Delaney managed to tip the cross, but the ball fell to Almaguer on the back post for her second goal of the match for the Cougars.

16 minutes from time Houston added a fourth goal. The Cougars caught the Islanders on the attack. Delaney deflected a shot from Green, but Claire Salazar tapped in the rebound at the back post.

The Islanders recorded six shots in the match, each from a different player. Meghan Cordero had the only shot on goal for A&M-Corpus Christi. Delaney finished with five saves in the match.

Jacey Love returned to the starting lineup after missing the last three games due to injury. The Islanders were without Kallyn Redona, who missed the match through suspension for a red card picked up against UT-Rio Grande Valley last weekend.

A&M-Corpus Christi will begin Southland Conference play next Friday on the road at 7 P.M. against Abilene Christian. The match next weekend starts a three-game road trip for the Islanders.

Texas State 3, Stephen F. Austin 0
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team saw it’s nine-game home winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with Texas State handing the Ladyjacks a 4-0 loss at SFA Soccer Field. SFA concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-6-0 record.

“First of all, you have to credit Texas State,” said head coach Wally Crittenden. “They came in with a good game plan, they were motivated and they brought good energy. Texas State did what they wanted to do when they wanted to do it. From our standpoint, it starts with me, then our coaching staff, and goes all the way down to our players. It was unacceptable effort. This is not the standard of competitive mentality that we want to set for our program.

“As we head into our first conference game on Friday, it’s important that our coaches, players and everyone involved with the program take a step back and reflect on what we could have done better today. Ultimately, I feel that this is not an effort that will be replicated.”

The Ladyjacks outshot the Bobcats 14-10 and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks on Sunday. The run of play didn’t favor one team over another for most of the afternoon but Texas State proved to be the more opportunistic side, holding an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and getting four goals to show for it.

SFA created several good scoring chances going through sophomore Hanna Barker down the left flank. Barker gave Texas State’s back line trouble all day with dangerous crosses and also had two good looking shots in the second half. The 5-2 forward fed a ball to senior Rachel Owens on a corner kick in the 74th minute and Owens nearly had her second goal of the weekend after putting a header on frame. Owens led SFA in shots (3) and shots on goal (2) for the second straight game.

Sophomore forward Michaela Mencacci fired a shot on goal that required a difficult save in the closing minutes after receiving a corner kick from Brooke Dunnigan. Senior forward Ashton Norman and junior midfielder Amanda Doyle also tested the Texas State keeper with shots on goal during the match.

The Bobcats (4-2-0) scored two goals in each half on Sunday, getting the first in the 12th minute. Taylor Allen found Kira Zapalac at the top of the 18, where she buried a ball into the right side netting. Texas State went up 2-0 in the 37th minute on an own goal off an Alyssa Phelan corner kick. A loose ball inside the six-yard box was deflected off a Ladyjack defender and trickled in.

Lauren Prater made it 3-0 in favor of the Bobcats 15 minutes into the second half. She collected a through ball down the center of the field from Rachel Grout and capitalized on the one-on-one situation. Texas State capped the scoring in the 77th minute when Kassi Hormuth finished a cross from the left sideline at the far post.

The Ladyjacks will begin their quest for a fifth consecutive Southland Conference regular season title when league play begins next Friday. SFA will host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. at SFA Soccer Field.
