Wiggins, Rushford Named Cross Country Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana senior Harry Wiggins was named Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week while Northwestern State sophomore Jacqueline Rushford was named Women’s Cross Country Athletes of the week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday.
 
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Harry Wiggins, Southeastern Louisiana
Wiggins placed third overall in the men's 5K competition, finishing less than three seconds out of second with a time of 15:41.35. It was the second best 5K time of the senior's career. The Prairieville, La. (Family Christian Academy), native helped lead the Southeastern men to a third place finish with 69 points, just five points behind second-place New Orleans. This is the second time in two years he has placed third at the LSU Invitational.

Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Jacqueline Rushford, Northwestern State
Rushford led the Lady Demons to a first-place finish at the Louisiana Tech Mook 5 in Ruston, La., on Saturday. The DeRidder, La. (DeRidder HS), native won the three-mile course by 52 seconds with a time of 18:43 against 42 total runners and eight different teams. This is Rushford’s second top-four finish in three meets.
 
Honorable Mention: Alexandria Hackett, Abilene Christian; Clarissa Smith, Southeastern La.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
