MONROE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana freshman Sofia Olsson scored a pair of goals to help the Lady Lions to a 2-2 tie with Louisiana-Monroe in non-conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at the ULM Soccer Complex.
SLU (4-1-1) extended its unbeaten streak to three matches. Louisiana-Monroe ran its record to 3-3-1 overall with the tie.
“We did a great job creating opportunities today,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “We missed on some chances that could’ve opened up the match for us.”
Olsson, a Lysekil, Sweden native, provided all the scoring for the Lady Lions, netting her first two collegiate goals. Senior Gisenia Utreras and junior Marisa Rodrigues each were credited with assists for SLU. Lady Lion junior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash finished with a season-high nine saves.
“Sofia was a great presence up top for us and generated a lot of opportunities,” Hornbuckle said. “(Junior) Bri Singh provided a nice spark for us and Gisenia really opened up the game out wide for us. (Junior) Katie Noonan continues to be rock solid in the back, winning ball and helping generate us into the attack. Hope was strong in goal, cutting out opportunities, collecting balls and launching us into the attack.”
Southeastern drew first blood in the 14th minute. Utreras played a ball into the box and Olsson put it in the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lions maintained the lead until the 58th minute. Mariah Mitchell finished a combo that included Whitney Tuckfield and Mary Ashton Lembo to knot the score at 1-1.
SLU retook the lead a little over eight minutes later. Rodrigues played the ball ahead to Olsson who tucked the shot into the right side of the net to give the Lady Lions a 2-1 lead.
ULM equalized the match with a little over 12 minutes left in regulation. Lembo scored off a corner kick to tie the score at 2-2. The score would remain deadlocked heading into overtime.
Southeastern was the aggressor throughout both overtime periods. The Lady Lions out-shot ULM, 7-0, in overtime, but the Warhawks held on for the tie.
SLU will be back in action on Friday, hosting South Alabama at 4 p.m. at Chappapeela Park.

A&M-Corpus Christi 2, UT-Rio Grande Valley 2 (2OT)
Corpus Christi, Texas – 110 minutes and an Yvette Franco brace were not enough to separate the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team and UT-Rio Grande Valley on Sunday at the Dugan Soccer Stadium. After the Islanders took the lead in the second half, the Vaqueros scored a late goal to even the match, before two scoreless overtime periods ended the match in a 2-2 tie.
"We have a lot of positives to take away from this game," said head coach Shanna Caldwell. "Yvette Franco scored two great goals for us, and we battled for the entire game. We need to learn how to play with a lead in the second half though. Giving up a late goal was difficult, but our players fought throughout overtime, especially when we went down to 10 men. It was a result for us today. We got a point out of the match, so we can build upon this performance."
"Next week, we will have a battle on our hands when we face Houston," she added. "It has always been a tough match against them, and we have had a good rivalry with them in the few years of our program. It will take a full 90 minutes to get result against the Cougars."
The Vaqueros took the lead early in the 5th minute, as the visitors converted on a turnover by the Islanders at midfield. Andreya Barrera set up a breakaway for Malia Irvine on the right side of the box. The Vaquero freshman finished to the back post from eight yards away.
A&M-Corpus Christi controlled the play for the remainder of the first half. Shots by Nanna Poulsen, Tatum Printy and Jordan Harden threatened the Vaquero goal, but could not find the back of the net. The teams went to the halftime break with the visitors holding a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Franco scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Poulsen. The Danish international found space on the right wing, where she sent a low curling ball into the box. Franco beat her defender to the top of the six-yard box to finish with a volley past Vaquero goalkeeper Erica Gonzalez.
The Islanders took their first lead of the season in the 70th minute when Franco picked up her second goal of the day. The play started when Hannah Joseph made a hard challenge on a Vaquero midfielder and came away with the ball. The Flower Mound, Texas, native then played Franco in on goal from outside the box. Showing calmness under pressure, the junior cut back when a UTRGV defender made a challenge, in order to have a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, where she finished on the ground from six yards away.
UTRGV responded to tie the game three minutes from time. Meghan Oram hit a volley into the far netting, after finding herself free in front of the net when a bouncing ball ricocheted off an Islander defender. The score would remain tied at 2-2 when the horn signaled the end of regulation.
In the overtime periods, neither team managed a shot on goal, as play remained in the midfield area. Both defenses thwarted opposing attacks, and the Vaqueros tallied the only two shots in the extra time.
Kallyn Redona picked up red card in the 105th minute, which is the only card for the Islanders this season. A&M-Corpus Christi continued to control the midfield and halt any Vaquero attacks in the final five minutes of play. Gonzalez denied a Hailey Sutton breakaway with 30 seconds remaining to ensure a draw between the two programs.
Megan Delaney had another strong performance for the Islanders, recording one save, while being a commanding presence in the 18-yard box. Poulsen finished the match with five shots, two on goal, to add to her assist. A&M-Corpus Christi recorded a season-high 20 shots in the game.
The Islanders will hit the road for a single match next weekend. On Sunday, A&M-Corpus Christi will visit Houston at 1 P.M. The Cougars are 1-4 after a 3-0 loss at North Texas today. Houston will play McNeese State on Friday before the match with the Islanders on Sunday.

Louisiana Tech 4, Nicholls 1
RUSTON, La. – In a match that featured multiple yellow cards, a penalty kick score and a phantom goal, the Nicholls State University women’s soccer team was overcome, 4-1, by Louisiana Tech on a 100-degree Sunday afternoon.
It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs (4-2) to open up the scoring, when Brittany Beddow chipped a shot over the head of Colonel goalie Taylor Mosley only a minute and 22 seconds into the contest.
Twenty minutes later, things got confusing.
At the 21-minute mark, a scrum in front of the Nicholls (1-3-1) net resulted in a second goal for Louisiana Tech. Despite the ball being kicked multiple times by both teams in close proximity of the net, the ball never appeared to come close to crossing the goal line at any point. After the Colonels cleared the ball, a whistle sounded, and both teams appeared to be momentarily perplexed. Seconds later, the Bulldog squad began to celebrate after realizing they were awarded a second goal.
A foul at the 35-minute mark gave Nicholls forward Spencer Valdespino a goal kick opportunity, and she easily placed the shot passed Louisiana Tech goalkeeper Kylee Seto.
Fifteen minutes later Valdespino took a shot that found the back of the net, and momentarily appeared to be the tying goal, but offside was called.
The Colonels remained within a goal, down 2-1, until the 82
nd minute, when Kathryn Sloan made a move to the right and put the ball into the back left corner of the net. Three minutes later, after a goalie change (Haley Golden for Mosley), Sloan assisted on a goal by Beddow, effectively ending any chance of a Nicholls comeback.
The Bulldogs outshot the Colonels 18-6 overall, and finished with 10 shots on goal, compared to three for Nicholls.
Mosley finished with six saves, while allowing three goals for the Colonels. Golden surrendered one goal.
Seto earned two saves in the victory.
Kaylie Daniels and Elizabeth Newell were each awarded a yellow card for Nicholls. Kailee Hervey received a yellow card for Louisiana Tech.
Nicholls will host Alcorn State on Friday at 4 p.m.

Baylor 7, UIW 1
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS –The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team hosted Baylor University on Sunday at Benson Stadium and were dealt a 7-1 defeat.
The Bears (1-4-1) controlled the match from the outset peppering the Cardinals' (2-4-0) with shots throughout the contest. In the first half, Baylor had the majority of possession, but they were only able to score twice on Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) who was called upon to make eight saves in the half.
The Cardinals briefly made the game interesting at the beginning of the second half. Freshman Emily Halal (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) scored less than two and half minutes into the half to make it 2-1. She received a cross field pass from Kylie Allison (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish HS) and let the ball run to her outside left foot and then she fired to the far top corner of the net from 25 yards out to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
The Bears regained control of the game four minutes later when Julie James scored on a rocket to the near post from the left wing. Sarah King set her up with the assist. Six minutes after that, King put the game out of reach when she scored her own goal from the left wing to the right side of the net.
The Bears had six different goal scorers in the game. Precious Akanyirige scored twice in the first half for the visitors. Overall, they attempted 27 shots to just three for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend at the University of Tulsa Tournament. They play Oral Roberts on Thursday night and Tulsa on Friday night.

Louisiana-Lafayette 1, Northwestern State 0
LAFAYETTE, La. – Despite a Northwestern State edge in overall shots and offensive opportunities, a lone UL Lafayette goal in the 82nd minute was the difference in a 1-0 NSU loss on Sunday.
ULL's Ashleigh Cade took an Annika Smith pass into the right side of the box and finished the goal, Cade's first of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns (4-2).
Northwestern State (2-3-1) attempted 18 shots (seven on goal) to ULL's 12 shots (five on goal), and the Lady Demons had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
NSU coach George Van Linder said plenty of positives can be taken from Sunday's loss, including the edge in possession and shots.
"We battled in tough conditions with the heat, and it's a positive that we had lots of chances," Van Linder said. "We didn't get (our chances) in and ran out of time, but hopefully we'll regroup from this.
"These are painful experiences, but we'll be better in the Southland Conference because of it."
NSU sophomore midfielder Shelby Drope led the offensive attack with all three of her shots on goal, while freshman forward Brittany Caserma landed one of her three shots on goal.
Other Lady Demons taking two shots with one on goal include senior midfielder Cassandra Briscoe, sophomore forward Esdeina Gonzalez and sophomore defender Amy Renteria.
"We're confident and felt good about the amount of possession we had, and for long stretches, we felt in control," Van Linder said. "Credit ULL's defense and their goalkeeper for coming up big.
"For us defensively, overall our team is doing well. We had a mental breakdown as a team defensively for just a second. Sometimes you get away with it, but ULL made us pay. It's the curse of having a young team, and hopefully we'll learn from these mistakes right now instead of during the conference season."
Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Latham (0-2-1) took the loss with one goal allowed in the second half. Latham made three saves.
Senior goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonais posted a scoreless first half, her fifth scoreless half of the season. Bourbonais saved one shot Sunday.
ULL extended its winning streak to three matches this season and to four matches against the Lady Demons.
NSU ends its five-match road trip with a 1-3-1 record, which includes a 1-1 tie against LSU. The Tigers (4-0-2) are 3-0-1 in the four matches since the NSU tie.
The Lady Demons return to the Lady Demon Soccer Complex on Tuesday when they host Alcorn State at 7 p.m.

Tulsa 2, Central Arkansas 0
Tulsa, Okla. – The Central Arkansas women’s soccer team took the field against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday afternoon. The Bears struggled to get anything going offensively on the day, falling 2-0.
Tulsa (6-0) got on the board in the 13th minute, when Alexa Sidorakis fed a pass to Tana Dake, who put it away from 12 yards out to give the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Hurricane added to its lead in the 68th minute, when Dake fired a shot that Central Arkansas keeper Lauren Mercuri deflected. The deflection fell to Elisa Impagliazzo, who tapped it in from two yards out.
The Bears took three shots on the day, led by Alex Moore, who put her only attempt on goal, while Shelby Wilson and Dayna Mounie each took a shot.
In goal for the Bears, Anna Hughes and Mercuri each made five saves and allowed a goal.
Central Arkansas returns to the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex for a pair of matches next weekend. The Bears will take on Missouri State on Friday evening at 7 p.m., before hosting Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at 3 p.m.

New Mexico State 4, Lamar 3
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Lamar University women’s soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to end thanks to a stunning turn of events in the final 10 minutes of a 4-3 loss at New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon.
The host Aggies erupted for three goals in a span of 6:11 in the dying moments of the game to rally past the Cardinals on the final day of the Sixth Annual Border Bash as LU squandered a 3-1 lead.
“We gave that game away,” a disappointed LU coach Orlando Cervantes said afterward. “We played a great game in the first half, but we started playing their game in the second half. We’re not going to win when we do that.”
Lamar (3-3-0) built a 3-1 lead in the first half thanks to two goals from Alexus Aviles, who moved into the team lead with five goals this season, and one from Morgan Burden. Juliana Ocampo assisted on both of Aviles’ goals. Aileen Galicia scored in the first half for New Mexico State (1-5-0).
The score stayed at 3-1 until late in the second half when Galicia’s second of the game made it 3-2 with 8:14 remaining. That goal seemed to spark the Aggies, as Audrey Chavez scored on a header just 61 seconds later to tie the game at 3.
The game seemed to be headed for overtime, but New Mexico State’s Holly Abdelkader had other plans, as she netted the game-winning goal with just 2:03 remaining on the clock.
“We should have put that game away when we had the chance,” Cervantes said. “We’re young and we’re learning, but that was our game to win. It doesn’t matter if you’re hot and tired. The other team is hot and tired as well. This is as tough a loss that I’ve had as a coach.”
Lauren Lovejoy made six saves for LU, while Ashley Marti made four saves for the Aggies.

Arizona 3, Stephen F. Austin 0
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team played a great first half against Arizona on Sunday afternoon in the Sun Devil Desert Classic, but couldn’t keep up with the Wildcats in a 3-0 defeat. The match was played at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.
Redshirt sophomore Lillie Ehlert had another great outing for the Ladyjacks between the posts. She tied a career-high set on Friday night with 11 saves for SFA – nine of which came in the second half. The goalkeeper made multiple diving stops and put an end to numerous Arizona attacks on the afternoon.
The Ladyjacks (0-5) created their best scoring chances in the opening half. Sophomore forward Hanna Barker came within inches of her first goal of the season in the 25th minute, launching a strike over the Arizona keeper and drilling the crossbar. Junior midfielder Amanda Doyle recorded SFA’s only shot on goal less than 30 seconds later, but it was saved.
Junior defender Brooke Dunnigan was able to get a shot off on a Barker corner kick in the seventh minute and senior midfielder Rachel Owens also took a crack at goal in the first half.
Arizona (5-0) lit the scoreboard first with a goal off a flip throw-in at the 40:33 mark in the game. Hannah Stevens headed the long throw into the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 cushion at halftime. It was the first goal allowed by the Ladyjacks in the first half over the team’s last four games.
Other than the one Wildcat break-through in the first 45 minutes, SFA played Arizona level before the intermission. The Ladyjacks were only outshot by four (8-4) and gave up a minimal 3-1 edge in shots on goal and corners.
Arizona took control in the second half, getting goals from Paige Crouch in the 59th minute and Kennedy Kieneker in the 83rd to cap the scoring at 3-0. Crouch scored from straight on after dispossessing SFA of the ball in the offensive third, while Kieneker notched a goal with a header off a corner kick.
SFA finishes its season opening five-game road stretch after facing some of the best teams in the nation. Four of the Ladyjacks’ five opponents so far in 2015 have been members of Power Five conferences (Arkansas, Minnesota, Arizona State, Arizona) while three opponents have been ranked or receiving votes in the national polls.
The Ladyjacks will play their first home game next Friday, September 11 against ULM at SFA Soccer Field. Start time is set for 7 p.m.

Texas A&M 4, Abilene 1
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior goalkeeper Sydney Newton set a school record with 14 saves while making her first start of the 2015 season Sunday night at No. 3 Texas A&M, which scored three times in the second half en route to a 4-1 win at Ellis Field.
Half of the Aggies' goals were scored on penalty kicks taken in the 67th and 70th minutes by Haley Pounds, who finished with a natural hat trick. She also scored the game-winning goal at the start of the 58th minute with assists coming from Karlie Mueller and Kate Hajdu.
ACU's lone goal also was on a PK taken by sophomore Chantal Kinsey, whose first points of the year came in the 17th minute. It was her first goal since ACU's 5-1 win over UT Pan American last Sept. 12 in San Antonio.
Unfortunately, ACU's lead lasted just over two minutes as the Aggies received their equalizer at the 18:42 mark off the foot of Mikaela Harvey from inside the six-yard box. Harvey's fourth goal of the fall was assisted by Stephanie Malherbe and Emily Bates.
The Aggies improved to 5-1 with the victory, while the Wildcats fell to 1-4-1 with two more tough matches at TCU and Texas right around the corner next Friday and Sunday. ACU's match vs. UT will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
"We really played tough the first half and with a good amount of composure against a great team," said head coach Casey Wilson. "It really shows how capable we can be at times. We just need to do it longer ... As for Sydney, she played great and showed quite a bit of athleticism with some of the saves she made."
Newton has steadily been splitting time in net with classmate Kelsey Dombrowski since the start of the 2013 season, but never played against an opponent quite as talented and multi-faceted as the Aggies, who regularly play deep into the NCAA postseason.
Newton came into the match with a career high of nine saves (Sept. 5, 2014 vs. North Texas) and nearly reached that total following a first half in which the Aggies fired 15 shots and took five corner kicks.
Texas A&M was equally relentless on behalf of their 2,718 fans in the second half, blasting 16 shots to go along with seven additional corners. But Newton continued to find the ball time-and-time again (with the exception of the penalty kicks) and added six more saves to her already considerable total.
By comparison, A&M starting goalkeeper Taylor Saucier made one save in 75:53 minutes of action (vs. freshman Sophie Standifer), while backup Mia Hummel faced only two shots over the final 14:07. One of those shots sailed high and another was blocked as the Wildcats finished with six attempts and two on goal.
Newton's 14 saves broke the old school record of 11, which was previously held by Allison Egan (Oct. 3, 2007 vs. Midwestern State) and Elliott London (Oct. 16, 2011 vs. Angelo State and Nov. 13, 2011 vs. Midwestern State).
Additionally, the 31 shots allowed by ACU were its most since the program's first year of 2007 when Central Oklahoma had 38 in its 7-0 win in Edmond, Okla.
