Moore, Barze Earn First Men’s Track and Field Weekly Awards of the Season

FRISCO, Texas - Sam Houston State sophomore Jeffrey Moore was named the Southland Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Southeastern Louisiana junior Steven Barze earned men’s field athlete of the week honors in the first weekly awards of the season, the league announced Wednesday.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Jeffrey Moore, Sam Houston State
Moore posted the fastest time in the 800-meter at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. The Carrollton, Texas (Newman Smith H.S.), native took first place out of 14 runners with a time of 1:53.62 seconds and ran the second-leg for Sam Houston State’s 4x800-meter relay that placed second. Moore ranks No. 10 nationally and first in the Southland Conference.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Steven Barze, Southeastern Louisiana
On his first jump of the season, Barze broke a Southeastern long jump record that dated back to the early 1990’s. His 26-foot jump broke the previous record (25-04) by almost one foot. The mark earned him first place at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational and the USTFCCCA’s National Athlete of the Week award, which was announced on Tuesday.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors
