Sam Houston State Sweeps First Women’s Track and Field Weekly Awards of the Season

FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State senior Danielle Demas was named the Southland Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Sam Houston State senior Ashley Jenkins earned women’s field athlete of the week honors in the first weekly awards of the season, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week – Danielle Demas, Sam Houston State
Demas posted the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. The Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek H.S.), native took first place out of 14 runners with a mark of 8.31 seconds and ran a qualifying time of 8.23 seconds, which would rank third nationally.
 
Honorable Mention: Dawnshae Evans, Stephen F. Austin; Nakiya Smith, Southeastern La.
 
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – Ashley Jenkins, Sam Houston State
Jenkins shattered her previous school record, starting the year No. 2 nationally in the weight throw with a first-place toss of 68 feet, 11 ¾ inches at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. The Dallas, Texas (Hillcrest HS), native bested 29 other competitors, including 11 from the Southland Conference, while setting a new program record by over six feet.
 
Honorable Mention: Jarmisha Frazier, Southeastern La.; Jessica Spelling, Stephen F. Austin.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
