Lyons, Williams Earn Men’s Track and Field Weekly Awards

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior Dontrell Lyons was named the Southland Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Northwestern State senior Emmanuel Williams earned Southland Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Dontrell Lyons, Southeastern Louisiana
Lyons shattered a school record by running the fastest 400 meters in the country this season, finishing first in 46.32 seconds at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational on Saturday. The previous record was 48.40 seconds. The Karnes City, Texas (Karnes City H.S.), native went on to anchor the 4x400 and broke the school record for the second straight week, winning in 3:11.64. On Friday, Lyons finished second in the 200 meters in 21.16 seconds, the 22nd-fastest time in the nation. Lyons has finished first or second in each of the seven events he has competed in this season.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Emmanuel Williams, Northwestern State
Williams improved his season best in the long jump with a mark of 51’0” at the MSSU Southern Invite on Friday. The Duson, La. (Acadiana H.S.), native moved up to rank 10th nationally, second in the Southland. His winning triple jump mark of 25’2.5” leads the Southland and ranks 22nd nationally.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
