Bearkats Sweep Another Women’s Track and Field Weekly Awards

FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State sophomore Camry Grigsby was named the Southland Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Sam Houston State senior Ashley Jenkins earned the Southland Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week – Camry Grigsby, Sam Houston State
Grigsby captured a school record with a first-place finish in the 800 meters at the Cherry and Silver Invitational this weekend. The time ranks the sophomore first in the Southland and No. 42 nationally. The Desoto, Texas (Desoto H.S.), native marked her second straight win for this season.
 
Honorable Mention: Kierstin Santana, Houston Baptist; Braneshia Payton, Northwestern State.
 
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – Ashley Jenkins, Sam Houston State
Jenkins became the nation’s No. 1 weight thrower with a school-record toss over 71 feet, setting a new program best for the third straight week. The Dallas, Texas (Hillcrest H.S.), native becomes the first Sam Houston track or field athlete to hold the top mark in an event nationally.
 
Honorable Mention: Sarea Alexander, UIW; Madeline Kaufmann, Stephen F. Austin.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
