FRISCO, Texas
– Following another impressive week for the Southland’s top two teams, junior setter Kristyn Nicholson and junior libero Lexus Cain of Stephen F. Austin were named Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Monday. This mark’s Cain’s second weekly defensive recognition of the season.
 
Offensive Player of the Week – Kristyn Nicholson, A&M-Corpus Christi
In the Islanders’ lone match of the week, setter Kristyn Nicholson engineered an attack that hit .430 as the Blue and Green recorded its second highest hitting percentage in program history. Nicholson’s 44 assists were just five shy of a school record in a three-set match. The impressive match continued to show the importance of Nicholson and her ball distribution to the most prolific attack in the Southland Conference.

Defensive Player of the Week – Lexus Cain, Stephen F. Austin
One of the nation’s best back-row defensive players continued her strong 2016 season as junior Lexus Cain averaged 5.67 digs per set in the second-straight perfect week for Stephen F. Austin. Cain’s efforts in the back line helped limit SFA’s opponents to a hitting percentage of .121 and upped her Southland Conference-leading digs per set average to 5.41. With Cain’s assistance, the Ladyjacks have risen to the top of the league in terms of opponent hitting percentage (.166) and digs per set (18.29).

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
