McNeese Sweeps Cross Country Athlete of the Week Awards

The Cowboys earn both awards following first-place team finish at Cowboy Stampede

FRISCO, Texas – Following a strong team showing this weekend from both McNeese teams, senior Fisher Hamilton and junior Katja Woelfl were named as Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday.
 
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Fisher Hamilton, McNeese
The hometown senior led the way to a McNeese team win at their Cowboy Stampede meet on Saturday. Hamilton clocked a 5K finishing time of 15:42.6, 2.6 seconds behind the second-place finisher. He finished third overall, and second out of the collegiate runners. The Cowboys finished first out of six teams, with Hamilton pacing a strong 2-3-5-6-7 collegiate scoring order for McNeese.
 
Honorable Mention: Markus Schweikert, Central Arkansas
 
Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Katja Woelfl, McNeese
On the Cowgirls’ side, Woelfl emphatically led the way for McNeese’s women’s team win, taking first place by a margin of 1:06.4. Woelfl posted a 5K finishing time of 17:56.2, topping a very strong 1-2-4-5-7 scoring order for her team. She was the top finisher for the Cowgirls for the second meet in a row.
 
Honorable Mention: Clarissa Smith, Southeastern La., Brigette Caruthers, Central Arkansas
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
