No. 4 McNeese State Advances to Semifinals with 4-1 win over No. 5 New Orleans

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – No. 4 McNeese State (15-6) closed out the first day of the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 victory against fifth-seeded New Orleans (15-8) at the Schlief Tennis Center this afternoon.

The doubles point went to the Cowgirls after the No. 1 and No. 3 pairs won 6-1, 7-5 (6-4), respectively. Freshman of the year Giovanna Fioretti and Sarah Jurakova handed New Orleans’ Anja Luethi and Trang Dao a loss as Privateers Soledad Calderon and Anna Segarra Ruis defeated Klaudia Gawlik and Julia Kral. Cowgirls Hannah Brett and Charoline Erlandsson clinched the point with a win over Hafsa Laraibi and Yasmine Rashad.

In singles action, McNeese State clinched the win with three straight set victories at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 flights. Gawlik defeated Ruis 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot and Jurakova beat Luethi 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Brett downed Laraibi 6-1, 6-0 to take the final point. Fioretti and Kral were both leading before the match was clinched.

The Cowgirls will now face the top-seed Islanders tomorrow afternoon in the semifinals of the tournament, match time is slated for 2 p.m. CST from Nacogdoches. The Islanders swept No. 8 Lamar, 4-0, earlier this afternoon.

The Women's semifinals will take place tomorrow afternoon and the tournament championship will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
