No. 3 Northwestern State Edges No. 6 Southeastern Louisiana

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – No. 3 Northwestern State defeated No. 6 Southeastern Louisiana the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals at the Schlief Tennis Center. The Demons advance to the tournament's semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon to play seventh-seeded Central Arkansas.

The Lady Lions claimed the doubles point after 6-4, 6-2 wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 duo of Dalina Dahlmans and Southland Conference Player of the Year Renee Villarreal topped Natalya Krutova and Polina Ivanova, while Margaux Kaltenbacher and Dany Raygadas were winners over Barbora Kollarova and Alzbeta Veverkova. Polina Mutel and Iryna Vardanian of Northwestern State defeated Lucia Bustamante and Ceci Mercier at the second spot, 6-3.

In singles action, The Lady Demons claimed singles wins at the No. 2-No. 4 flights as well as the No. 6. Vardanian defeated Dahlmans 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot and Mutel beat Raygadas 6-2, 7-6, (5-3) at No. 3. Southeastern’s Villarreal and Bustamante emerged victorious, but Polina Ivanova’s 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Mercier and Veverkova’s 6-7, (5-7), 6-4, 6-1 win over Madina Vorotnikova gave Northwestern State the win.

The Lady Demons will now face No. 7 seed Central Arkansas tomorrow afternoon in the semifinals of the tournament. The Sugar Bears defeated second-seeded Stephen F. Austin, 4-1, earlier this afternoon.

The Southland tournament continues with two more quarterfinal matches this afternoon. Women's semifinals will take place tomorrow morning at 2 p.m. CST and the tournament championship will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
