Islanders Women Remain Undefeated with 4-0 Sweep of No. 8 Lamar

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (22-0) ended the first day of the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 sweep against No. 8 Lamar (8-12) at the Schlief Tennis Center this afternoon.
The Islanders claimed the doubles point after wins at the No. 1 (6-2) and No. 3 (6-3) flights. At No. 1 doubles Judit Vives and Jelena Dzinic defeated Andrea Ivanovic and Anna Spengler, while Southland Newcomer of the Year Hortense Boscher and Alexandra Belle clinched the point with a win over Lamar’s Stephanie Marchena and Talissa Merchier. The Islanders duo of Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin were tied with Katya Lapeyeva and Luciana Di Laura at the second spot when the doubles point was clinched by the.
In singles action, the Islanders claimed the win after defeating Lamar at the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 positions in straight sets. Dzinic defeated Lapayeva 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot and Rodriguez beat Merchiers 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. Singles player Kerry Galhos clinched the No. 6 win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Marchena. Islander netters Boscher, Vives, and Martin had not finished their singles matches when the match was clinched.
The Islanders will now face No. 4 seed McNeese State tomorrow afternoon in the semifinals of the tournament, match time is slated for 2 p.m. CST from Nacogdoches. The Cowgirls defeated fifth-seeded New Orleans, 4-1, this afternoon.
The Women's semifinals will take place tomorrow afternoon with the tournament championship will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
