No. 7 Central Arkansas Upsets No. 2 Stephen F. Austin 4-1 to Reach Semifinals

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Seventh-seeded Central Arkansas opened up the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 upset against second-seeded Stephen F. Austin at the Schlief Tennis Center this morning. The Bears advance to the tournament's semifinals at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
UCA claimed the doubles point after 6-3, 6-1 wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. The duo of Nataly Yoo and Amiru Shimoguchi topped Dhanielly Quevedo and Denise Maxl. Rada Manataweewat and QiLi Ma were winners over Vanesa Calvo Pardo and Liza Aginskaya. Xylia Chunan Xiang and Marli Van Heerden of UCA were ahead 5-4 at the second spot when the doubles point was clinched by the Bears.
In singles action, the Bears claimed singles wins at the number No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions as Xiang defeated Quevedo (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) at the No. 2 spot and Shimoguchi beat Lauren Hidalgo-Smith (6-3, 7-5) at No. 3. Heerden won the third match for the Bears with a (6-4, 6-0) victory over Pardo. UCA’s Ma and Krizia Buck had not finished their singles matches when the match was clinched.
The Bears will now face No. 3 seed Northwestern State tomorrow afternoon in the semifinals of the tournament, match time is slated for 2 p.m. CST from Nacogdoches. The Lady Demons defeated sixth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana, 4-3.
The Southland tournament continues with two more quarterfinal matches this afternoon. Women's semifinals will take place tomorrow morning at 2 p.m. CST and the tournament championship will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
