NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team (23-0) advanced to the Southland tournament championship match after edging fourth-seeded McNeese State (15-9), 4-3, in the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Center in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The Islanders claimed the doubles point after 6-1, 6-3 wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles, respectively. The No. 2 pair of Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin finished first with a win over Klaudia Gawlik and Julia Kral. Hortense Boscher and Alexandra Belle clinched the point with a win over Hannah Brett and Charoline Erlandsson. The Islanders’ No. 1 duo of Judit Vives and Jelena Dzinic were ahead 4-2 when the point was clinched.
In singles action, the Cowgirls were quick to get on the board claiming singles wins at the number No. 3-5 positions with win by Sarah Jurakova, Kral, and Brett to go up 3-1. Fearing a loss of a perfect season, the Islanders came storming back to win flight No. 6 then No. 2 to tie the game up. Fittingly so, everything came down to the No. 1 match of Boscher and Gawlik. Both girls traded sets as Boscher immerged victories for the Islanders with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win for the match point.
The Islanders will now face No. 3 seed Northwestern State tomorrow afternoon in the championship match, slated for 2 p.m. The Lady Demons defeated seventh-seeded Central Arkansas, 4-2, earlier this afternoon.
Northwestern State has made the championship match for the fourth consecutive year and is the defending tournament champion.
The Islanders handed the Lady Demons a 5-2 loss during conference play are one game away from a perfect 24-0 season.
The winner of the Southland tournament championship match will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championship.
