No. 5 Ladyjacks Rally Past No. 6 Bearkats

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Fifth-seeded Stephen F. Austin (27-28, 13-13 Southland) got a 14-11 victory over sixth-seeded Sam Houston Thursday afternoon in the Southland Conference Softball Tournament back draw opening round at the Cowgirl Diamond in Lake Charles, La. The Ladyjacks advance to the Southland tournament back draw second round with the win.
 
Sam Houston took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after single RBI by senior second baseman Dani Allen and sacrifice fly to bring in Allen.
 
Sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro solo homered in the second to get the Ladyjacks on the board.
 
The Bearkats got out to a 6-1 lead in the third with a grand slam by senior shortstop Tiffany Castillo.
 
SFA cut the lead down to three with a two-RBI double off the bat off freshman designated player Faith Talley.
 
Single RBIs by Allen and freshman first baseman Cody Carpenter paired with two walks with bases loaded gave Sam Houston a 10-3 lead to end the sixth.
 
SFA bats combined for 11 runs on 8 hits in the seventh, with 9 runs coming after the second out. The Ladyjacks went into the bottom of the seventh with their first lead of the game, up 14-10.
 
The Bearkats earned one run on four hits leaving three on base to end the game.
 
Earning the win for the Ladyjacks was Makayla Sikes, improving her record to 8-12 on the season. The Bearkats’ McLeod took the loss making her 11-11 on the year.
 
Stephen F. Austin will now face the winner of this afternoon’s matchup between second-seeded Nicholls and No. 4 Central Arkansas in the back draw second round tonight at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Lake Charles.
 
Southland tournament play continues this afternoon as the Colonels take on the Bears the other back draw first-round game of the day.
 
Sam Houston is now eliminated from the tournament and finishes the season 20-33 overall and 12-14 in league play.
