LAKE CHARLES, La. – Second-seed Nicholls earned a 3-1 win over fourth-seeded Central Arkansas Thursday afternoon in the Southland Conference Softball Tournament back draw opening round at the Cowgirl Diamond in Lake Charles, La. The Colonels advance to the Southland tournament back draw second round with the win.
Nicholls was first to score as a sacrifice fly brought senior outfielder Haley Parkinson home in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Bears junior outfielder Briana Whisenhunt singled in the fifth to score sophomore shortstop Kate Myers and tie the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman designated player Veronic Villafranco had run-scoring groundout. Senior first baseman Alexis Huss’s followed with a single RBI to give the Colonels a 3-1 lead.
Nicholls pitcher of the year Hannah Haydel pitched a complete game, giving up only run on two hits, improving her record to 23-8 on the season. Central Arkansas’s Shivaun Landeros took the loss making her 21-15 on the year.
Nicholls (39-16, 21-5 Southland) will now face No. 5 seed Stephen F. Austin in the back draw second round tonight immediately following the winner’s bracket semifinal in Lake Charles. Back in march both teams split the two-game series due to a weather cancellation.
Southland tournament play continues this evening as third-seeded Lamar takes on top-seeded tournament host McNeese in the winner’s bracket semifinals.
Central Arkansas is now eliminated from the tournament and finishes the season 35-22 overall and 21-5 in league play.
