SUGAR LAND, Texas – No. 2 Southeastern Louisiana defeated No. 6 McNeese 4-1 Saturday morning in the 2016 Southland Baseball tournament at Constellation Field.
Lion senior left-hander Dominick Carlini gave up one hit in 6.2 innings pitched to improve to 7-2 on the season. Junior second baseman Carson Crites went 2-for-3 with one walk against the Cowboys.
In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff hitter junior center fielder Jacob Seward tripled down the right field line followed by a double form junior left fielder Ryan Byers for a 1-0 lead over the Cowboys.
Freshman shortstop Brennan Breaud singled through the left side scoring senior designated hitter Daniel Midyett for a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the second inning.
McNeese got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore Joe Provenzano scored from third base on a wild pitch to cut the Lion’s lead in half, 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Southeastern senior catcher Sam Roberson drove the ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. Seward grounded out to second base for an RBI as senior designated hitter Daniel Midyett scored for a 4-1 lead.
McNeese ends its season 31-25 after falling in the semifinals as the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
The Lions will face the No. 1 Sam Houston State or No. 8 Stephen F. Austin Sunday at noon in the championship game.
