McKenzie, Groeber Named Track & Field Athletes of the Week

2017 Southland Indoor Track & Field Week Three Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Grace McKenzie and Olivia Groeber of Central Arkansas were named the Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week – Grace McKenzie, McNeese
Sophomore McKenzie set a personal record and came four points shy of the school record with 3653 in the pentathlon at the Samford Indoor Multi. The Cork, Ireland native also posted event PRs in the 800-meter (2:23.59), long jump (16-8.5) and 60-meter hurdles (9.11). Her point total is ranked first in the Southland Conference by more than 100 points and 21st nationally.
 
Honorable Mention: Samantha Gibson, Central Arkansas
 
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – Olivia Groeber, Central Arkansas
Groeber broke her own school record set in December with a height of 12-.02 to win the pole vault at the Emory CrossPlex Invitational. The freshman out of Rogers, Ark. helped Central Arkansas to a second-place team finish out of 23 teams at the event.
 
Honorable Mention: Madeline Kaufmann, Stephen F. Austin
 
McNeese hosts their second indoor meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 27 in Lake Charles, La. Central Arkansas heads north to Lawrence, Kan. for the Jayhawk Classic on Thursday, Jan. 26 and Friday, Jan. 27.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
