2017 Southland Indoor Track & Field Week Four Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – McNeese junior Olandis Johnson and Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Rodney Ruffin were named Southland Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is Ruffin’s second weekly honor of the 2017 season. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Olandis Johnson, McNeese
The Vivian, La. native broke a school and facility record with his first place run of 1:51.85 in the 800-meter. That time moved him to No. 1 in the Southland Conference.
 
Honorable Mention: Deion Hardy, UIW; Avery Williams, Abilene Christian; Micah Larkins, Northwestern State
 
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Rodney Ruffin, Southeastern Louisiana
Ruffin took firsts at both meets for the Lions this weekend and has picked up a victory in each of his four competitions this season. On Friday, the Gautier, Miss. native won the long jump at the McNeese Indoor II with a personal-best mark of 25 feet. That mark is the best in the Southland in 2017 and tied for the 17th in the country. Ruffin went on to take first place in the high jump with a 6-10.75 at the KMS Invitational on Sunday in Birmingham.

McNeese and Southeastern La. will both head to Baton Rouge for the LSU Bayou Bengal meet on Friday, Feb. 3.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
