2017 Southland Indoor Track & Field Week Five Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State junior Amir James and Southeastern Louisiana junior Devin King were named Southland Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
This mark’s James’ second weekly award after being named Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 11 after week one. For Southeastern, this is the team’s third weekly award of 2017.
 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Amir James, Northwestern State
In the 200-meter, James now owns the top time in the Southland Conference after blazing to a second-place finish in the Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan. with his mark of 21.08. This time is also the No. 2 all-time indoor mark in the Southland Conference. In the 60-meter, the Missouri City, Texas product’s time of 6.80 claimed second place in Pittsburg, and ranks fifth in the Southland Conference. His 200m time comes in below the 2017 UASTF Indoor National Championships qualifying time of 21.20.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Devin King, Southeastern Louisiana
King won his fourth straight pole vault title with a height of 17 feet, 6.5 inches at the Samford Open on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Birmingham, Ala. That mark eclipsed the four-year-old meet record of 16 feet, 4.75 inches. The Kentwood, La. native continues to hold the top spot in the pole vault in the Southland by a full six inches over second place.

Northwestern State is off during the upcoming weekend before heading to Birmingham, Ala. for the Southland Indoor Championships on Feb. 22 to 23. Southeastern Louisiana will take a short trip west to compete in the LSU Twilight meet in Baton Rouge on Friday, Feb. 17.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
