2017 Southland Indoor Track & Field Week Five Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – McNeese men’s track and field posted strong finishes at two separate events in week five. Junior Nathan Jones was named the Southland Track Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. Senior John Lemke earned weekly honors for his triple jump win at the LSU Bayou Bengal meet. This is the second consecutive week that a McNeese track athlete earned the award. Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Nathan Jones, McNeese
Jones ran a blistering 14:21.84 time in the 5,000-meter at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational for a second-place finish out of 41 competitors. The Rhyl, Wales native’s time boosted him to the top of the NCAA South Central Regional rankings and 27th nationally.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – John Lemke, McNeese
Back down south in Baton Rouge, Lemke took home first place in the triple jump at the LSU Bayou Bengal meet with a personal-best leap of 50-10.25. His finish was the best out of 10 finishers. This distance ranks the hometown Lake Charles product No. 1 in the Southland by nearly 10 inches and 31st nationally.

McNeese track and field next heads to the Birmingham CrossPlex again for the second Samford Indoor Invitational – their last meet before the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the same venue on Feb. 22 to 23.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
