FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State’s Amir James claimed his second Men’s Outdoor Athlete of the Week this season after finishing top four in his three events at the Baylor Invitational. Baylee Lara of Sam Houston State was named the Women’s Athlete of the Week following a win in the heptathlon in Nacogdoches. Men’s Athlete of the Week – Amir James, Northwestern State
Amir James ranked top six in the country for the 100 meters and 200 meters over the weekend. James, a junior from Missouri City, Texas (Dulles High School), claimed first place at the Baylor Invitational in the 200 with a 20.63 mark and posted a season-best in the 100 with a 10.20 time, which gave him third place honors. As part of the All-American 4x100 team, James helped the Demons snatch a fourth place finish at the invitational and top-15 national mark (40.03) for the weekend.

Women’s Athlete of the Week – Baylee Lara, Sam Houston State
Baylee Lara captured first place in the heptathlon at the Skechers Performance Carl Kight Invitational, besting five Southland competitors along the way. The freshman from the Woodlands, Texas (Oak Ridge High School), posted 4,915 points, ranking eighth among freshmen nationally, leading the Southland and places her 48th in the country. Lara took first in the 200 meters (2.74) and the 100-meter hurdles (13.92) while claiming top three finishes in four of the seven events.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
