FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana standout Devin King and Northwestern State’s De’Shalyn Jones earned this week’s Southland awards for outdoor track and field. King tied his season-best mark in the pole vault at the South Alabama Invitational while Jones set a program record for the second time this spring with a win in the 400-meter at the East Texas Invite. This is both the Lions’ and Lady Demons’ third time earning Outdoor Athlete of the Week on the season, with De’Shalyn Jones now owning two weekly honors in 2017.

Men’s Athlete of the Week – Devin King, Southeastern Louisiana
King tied a season best while winning the pole vault with a mark of 18-04.50 at the South Alabama Invitational on Friday, April 14. That height ties the second-best mark in school history, which King also cleared at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last month. It is the top mark in the Southland and tied for fourth in the nation in 2017.

Women’s Athlete of the Week – De’Shalyn Jones, Northwestern State
Jones set another school record, her second of the spring, with her time of 53.61 in the 400-meter. She now leads the Southland Conference in the 100m, 200m and 400m. She is also one of three Division I athletes to be ranked top 50 in the nation in all three events.

Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana both head to Baton Rouge next on Saturday, April 22 for the LSU Alumni Gold.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
