MONTGOMERY, Texas - Houston Baptist claimed its first Southland Conference Women's Golf Tournament Championship on Wednesday behind sophomore Lexi Brooks' record-breaking performance at Woodforest Golf Club.
Heading into the third round following a two-under day two, Brooks shot one-under in the final round to lift the individual trophy and earn the Huskies an automatic bid to the NCAA regionals. Brooks' final score of 210 (71-69-70) breaks a five-year record for low medalist total set by Sam Houston State's Shelby Hardy (212).
Huskies' freshman Alisa Chong finished the tournament third at four-over (70-70-74) after shooting even the first two rounds. HBU took the team title with a final score of 881, edging Central Arkansas by one stroke.
The Bears put the pressure on Houston Baptist all day, entering the round sitting third and 11 strokes back. They shot a tournament-best round of 288 to take runner-up honors with senior Brenda Gonzalez shooting one-under for the day and finishing tied for eighth (74-77-70). Sophomore Emma Svensson took fourth overall, shooting two-over each day. Lamar's Elodie Chapelet (73-75-71) also shot a 219 for the tournament.
Sam Houston State finished three strokes back from second with freshman Hannah Alberto (72-75-69) placing runner-up, shooting a day best two-under. Junior Gianti Mahardika (73-73-75) ended the tournament with a share of eighth.
Lamar, who entered the tournament as the four-time defending champions, placed fourth overall at 897 followed by Stephen F. Austin just a stroke away, McNeese (905) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (909). UIW, playing unattached, scored a 943.
The Huskies will await the selection show for the NCAA regional set for April 27 at 11 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
