Alex Young, Thai Williams Earn Weekly Honors for Outdoor Track & Field

FRISCO, Texas – Alex Young of Southeastern Louisiana earned his second-straight weekly honor of the 2017 outdoor season with another record-breaking hammer throw performance. On the women’s side, Lamar’s Thai Williams rewrote a 36-year old program record with her winning long jump at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational. Men’s Athlete of the Week – Alex Young, Southeastern Louisiana
Young broke the Lions’ hammer throw record for the second-straight week while taking first at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with a mark of 235-05.00 last Thursday. That mark leads the nation and came against a field that featured nine of the top 30 marks in the country this season, including four of the top seven.

Women’s Athlete of the Week – Thai Williams, Lamar
Thai Williams broke a 36-year old record with a 20-07.75 winning mark that ranks eighth in the country, third in the west region and first in the Southland Conference. The sophomore shattered her own personal best – indoor or outdoor – by nearly a foot. She broke Carolyn Ford’s 19-09.75 mark set in 1981, and the next closest leap to Williams’ at the event was Jaden Mattox’s (Purdue) 19-07.50 jump. Saturday, she went on to claim another top 10 finish in the triple jump with a 38-09.75 mark.

Southeastern Louisiana next heads to Lake Charles to take part in the McNeese Spring Time Classic on Saturday, April 8 while Lamar will be competing in the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas on the same day.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
