NEW ORLEANS, La.
– A hot and sunny final day at the 2017 Outdoor Trak & Field Championships saw heated competition come down to the wire for both men and women. With Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Sam Houston State men won their third overall men’s title – their first since 2006. The Ladyjacks came away with their eighth women’s team title in history, the highest among all Southland members.

Heading into the final two events – the 5000m and 4x400m relay – Stephen F. Austin held leads in both the men’s and women’s team scoring. In the women’s 5K, Lamar’s Evelyn Chavez and Jannika John built themselves a sizable lead entering the final three laps, followed closely by Sam Houston State’s Ana Moreno with one lap to go. Moreno closed hard in the back stretch, taking a lead into the final turn and would hold on for the win over Lamar’s standout pair. Moreno clocked a 17:39.75 to claim valuable points for the Bearkats, followed by John (17:41.46) and Chavez (17:41.72).
