Sugar Bears Sweep Season’s First Player of the Week Awards

FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas volleyball swept more than just its opening three matches this weekend as the Sugar Bears’ Samantha Anderson and Megan Nash were named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the Southland Conference office announced Monday. Offensive Player of the Week: Samantha Anderson – Junior – Right Side – Tyler, Texas
Anderson was instrumental in Central Arkansas’ tournament championship at the Buffalo Invite in Buffalo, NY. The junior right side hitter earned All-Tournament honors after ranking second on the team in kills and hitting percentage. The Tyler, Texas, product had a match-high 12 kills while hitting .409 against Canisius and added a match-high 13 kills on a .348 hitting percentage against Buffalo. She averaged 3.22 kills per set on a .310 hitting percentage.

Defensive Player of the Week: Megan Nash – Senior – Middle Blocker – Oakville, Ontario
Nash was named the Tournament MVP after serving in a variety of roles for the Sugar Bears in their 3-0 sweeps to open the season. The middle blocker from Oakville, Ontario, led Central Arkansas in blocks and ranked second among six-rotation players in digs, while leading the team in hitting percentage and aces and sitting third in kills. Nash collected the match-high in blocks against Canisius and Buffalo and tallied at least five digs in both of those matches. She ended the weekend averaging a block a set.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
