2017 Southland Cross Country Recap – Week Four

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Marek Spriestersbach and Lamar senior Evelyn Chavez were voted Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
Spriestersbach finished third overall at the Islander Splash to pace his team to a second-place finish out of 18 competing programs. Chavez finished sixth out of 140 athletes to lead the Cardinal women to a second-place team finish out of 17 schools at the Texas A&M Invitational.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next heads to College Station for Texas A&M’s Aggie Open on Friday, Oct. 6, while Lamar heads west to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14.
 
Men’s Athlete of the Week: Marek Spriestersbach, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Jr. – Limburg, Germany
Spriestersbach took third overall at the Islander Splash with a four-mile time of 19:33.4 to lead the team for the second-straight race. He finished seven seconds off the lead runner, and four seconds off the top Division I competitor in the meet.
 
Honorable Mention: Jamie Crowe, Lamar; Grant O’Callaghan, Southeastern Louisiana.
 
Women’s Athlete of the Week: Evelyn Chavez, Lamar – Sr. – Porter, Texas
Evelyn Chavez was the top Southland Conference finisher at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, helping the Cardinals finish second out 17 teams in the strong field. She clocked a 6K time of 21:17.2. The Cardinals finished only behind Texas A&M in a field that included five conference teams.
 
Honorable Mention: Allyson Girard, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Michaela Hackett, Abilene Christian; Tara Stuntz, Southeastern Louisiana.
 
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
