Southland Women’s Basketball 2018-19 Preseason All-Conference Teams Released
FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Cassidy Barrios, the 2017-18 Southland Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, leads the 2018-19 Southland Conference Preseason All-Conference Teams, the league announced Tuesday. The news comes ahead of the 2018 Basketball Social Media Day scheduled for tomorrow in Houston at the Toyota Center starting at 9 a.m. CT.
Barrios had a career year in which she helped claim the Colonels’ first Southland Conference Tournament championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament. She finished the season third in the conference for points per game (17.3) and rebounds (9.1) and second in steals per game (2.9), blocked shots (1.5) and three-point field goal percentage (.400). She is joined on the preseason teams with six other automatic selections who were all-conference picks last season.
Nicholls and Lamar each secured two preseason spots while Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist, Central Arkansas, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each earned one distinction.
Senior guards Chastadie Barrs and Moe Kinard, who will comprise the Cardinals’ starting backcourt, are part of the five-guard preseason first team. Barrs has won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award an unprecedented three times.
ACU’s Breanna Wright played the most minutes in the conference last year and the 58
th most in Division I, avergaing 36.37 minutes per game.
Imani Robinson, a junior at Incarnate Word, averaged 12.7 points per game and 4.8 rebounds last year.
The second team is headlined by senior guards Chanell Hayes of Stephen F. Austin, Amanda Johnson of Houston Baptist and Kamry Orr of Central Arkansas. A pair of juniors round out the second team in guard Tykeria Williams of Nicholls and Emma Young of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
All 26 men’s and women’s head basketball coaches will be in attendance for Q&As at the Southland Basketball Social Media Day and interactive social media activities on the Southland’s
Twitter,
Instagram and
Facebook accounts. The event is open to all media members.
Southland broadcasters Carley McCord and Lincoln Rose will also host the coaches for a show produced for ESPN3. The show will debut Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. CT, and be archived for later viewing.
The preseason teams were chosen by a poll of the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. Voters were not allowed to select their institution’s players.
