Lamar Men’s Tennis Three-Peats Southland Tournament Championship

HIGHLIGHTS

BEAUMONT, TEXAS
– It all came down to the hands of Lamar’s freshman Nicolas Mayr at the No. 5 line in the 2018 Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament Championship on Sunday at the Beaumont Tennis Municipal Center.

And he delivered.

The Cardinals, seeded at No. 4 in the tournament, shocked the No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in comeback fashion 4-3 to claim their third consecutive tournament championship. It was the fifth-straight battle between the two teams in the final.

Mayr had dropped the opening set to the Islanders’ Okkie Kellerman 7-6 (7-5) but battled back in the second set to win 7-6 (7-5) himself with the team score even at 3-3. The third set provided all the championship excitement expected with all eyes outside the fenced-in five court. Neither player was able to get up more than a point in the third set until Mayr put the match away with a service ace to end it 6-4.

It was the only singles match to go all three sets.

Corpus Christi had went up 3-1 after winning the doubles point and then earning points at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles lines. LU picked up the first singles point as Logan Powell routed the Islanders’ Thomas Rodrigues 6-3, 6-3.

The Cardinals’ Sebastian Santibanez defeated Corpus Christi’s William Mottet 6-4, 6-3 to bring the team within a point in the match. Lamar’s Benny Schweizer capitalized on a thrilling 7-6 (7-4) victory in the first set at the No. 1 line against Francois Kellerman to slide past in the second set 6-4.

LU will find out its NCAA Championship fate this Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
