FRISCO, Texas – Hanna Alberto of Sam Houston State is the 2017-18 Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday with its all-academic teams. All yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.

The Player of the Year earned the academic accolade posting a 3.71 GPA as a public health major. Alberto finished second at the 2018 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Tournament in Montgomery, Texas, after winning three regular season tournaments as a sophomore. She led the Southland in scoring average per round at 72.73.

She is one of two Bearkats named to the all-academic teams. Junior Jenna Phillips is a second-team selection with a 4.00 GPA in marketing.

The 2018 Southland Conference champion, Houston Baptist, leads all Southland schools in number of picks with three. Junior Kaity Cummings, who finished first at the Southland tournament in a record-breaking performance, is an automatic selection to the first team with a 3.70 GPA in kinesiology. Teammates Lexi Brooks and Alisa Chong each were voted to the second team.

Central Arkansas and Lamar each picked up two spots. Emma Svensson and Fernanda Lira each earned automatic selections to the first team for the Bears after a season which saw the duo claim spots in the NCAA Tournament; the first time UCA has sent two individuals to the tournament. Lamar’s Elodie Chapelet is an automatic selection to the first team with a 3.38 GPA in general business while teammate Olivia Le Roux secured her third all-academic selection, maintaining a 4.00 GPA studying biology.

McNeese’s Hannah Valentine was voted to the second team with a 3.97 GPA in molecular biology.

The All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
