SFA's Burch, McNeese's McKenzie Tabbed Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Cayla Burch and McNeese’s Grace McKenzie are the Southland Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. All Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.

Burch competed for the Ladyjacks at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, over the weekend capturing a first-place finish in the 600-yard race. McKenzie shined for the Cowgirls at the Samford Multis in Birmingham, Ala., with a first-place finish in the Pentathlon.

Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week – Cayla Burch, Stephen F. Austin – Fr. – Minneapolis, Minn.
The freshman led the 600-yard run at the Red Raider Invitational with a 1:22.96, a time that ranks 7th in the nation and first in the Southland this indoor season. Burch also served as a leg of the 4x400 relay team, which finished at a 3:50.60 clip marking the conference’s fourth fastest time this season.

Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week – Grace McKenzie, McNeese – Jr. – Cork, Ireland
The McNeese junior set a Southland Conference and McNeese record, in addition to an Irish national record, with 4,211 pentathlon points and a first-place finish at the Samford Multis. Her point total currently ranks her No. 2 in the nation for the Pentathlon. In addition, McKenzie set a new Cowgirl high jump record at 5-feet, 8 ½-inches. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the conference in the pentathlon, No. 2 in the high jump, No. 2 in the 800 meter, No. 3 in the 60-meter hurdles, and No. 3 in the long jump for the 2019 indoor season.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
