Lamar’s Ashworth Tabbed Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Lamar forward Lucy Ashworth is the 2019 Southland Conference Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday in conjunction with the All-Academic First and Second Teams. Southland yearly awards are presented by
Ready Nutrition.
A native of Manchester, England, Ashworth holds a 3.27 grade point average while majoring in nutrition and becomes the second-straight student-athlete to sweep the league’s top two awards after taking home Player of the Year honors. Now a two-time all-academic honoree, Ashworth was also named Forward of the Year after setting the conference record for assists in a single-season (17) and leading the league in shots (117) and shots on goal (69).
Northwestern State leads the way with five honorees, followed by Abilene Christian and McNeese with four each. Lamar earned a trio of selections while UIW, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin all each had two selected. Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each collected one all-academic spot.
Northwestern State’s Jayden Wheeler, Stephen F. Austin’s Allyson Halliday, Sam Houston State’s Courtney Pawlik and Megan Rickert of Houston Baptist earned automatic selections as members of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
Seven members of this year’s selections are repeat honorees from past all-academic teams, including Ashworth, Wheeler, Mulrooney, Abilene Christian’s Shay Johnson, McNeese’s Rachel Palet and Stephen F. Austin’s Sophia Fondren.
Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted.
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport’s championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions during the most recently completed season. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have hold at least a 3.20 GPA and have completed at least two years of athletic competition at the nominating school, including the current season.
CoSIDA Academic All-District/All-American selections and First Team All-Conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named all-academic.
