Sam Houston State’s Lindsey McLeod Named Softball Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State’s Lindsey McLeod is the 2019 Southland Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday along with its all-academic teams. All yearly awards are presented by
Ready Nutrition.
McLeod was named the 2019 Southland Pitcher and Player of the Year during her senior campaign, where she led the Bearkats to Southland regular-season and tournament titles. The Austin, Texas, native was a First Team All-Conference selection, a Third Team NFCA All-Region pitcher and a 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District and All-America® honoree. Her final season with Sam Houston State was nothing short of spectacular as she delivered two no-hitter performances, one perfect game against UT-Martin (March 1) and 2-1 upset over No. 9 Texas in the opening round of the NCAA Softball Tournament. McLeod concluded her career at Sam Houston State with a 4.0 grade-point average and a degree in public health.
In total, 10 softball student-athletes earned automatic first team selections. Four were named Google Cloud All-District picks and eight earned first team all-conference honors. McLeod and Houston Baptist’s Demi Janak represent the Southland on the Academic All-America roster.
In addition to McLeod, Lamar’s Kelly Meeuwsen, along with Megan Landry and Amanda Gianelloni of Nicholls are each making their third-career appearances on a Southland all-academic squad.
Of the 10 schools represented on the all-academic squads, Nicholls and Sam Houston State lead the conference with four selections apiece. All four of the Colonels’ honorees earned spots on the first team. Abilene Christian and Southeastern Louisiana each have three representatives. Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese and Northwestern State all landed a pair of selections among the two teams. Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the represented institutions with one honoree each.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection, excluding pitchers. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or Google Cloud Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
