SFA’s Aiyana Johnson Named Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Aiyana Johnson is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Johnson pushed the Ladyjacks (13-3, 6-1 SLC) to a pair of wins at home last week, including a 102-41 win over Central Arkansas and a 67-45 victory over UIW. Johnson averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for the week and tacked on her sixth double-double performance of the season.

The award marks the second of the season for the SFA sophomore.

Johnson narrowly missed out on a double-double in Wednesday’s rout of the Sugar Bears, tallying 13 points and nine rebounds over the course of 22 minutes. She then followed suit on Saturday with her sixth double-double of the season, throwing down 12 points and 10 boards on 6-of-9 shooting against UIW. The sophomore concluded the week averaging 12.5 points and a 58.8-percent field goal average. She currently ranks second in the Southland for rebounds (8.6) and field goal average (.561).

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
