Nicholls’ Chelsea Cain Named Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Chelsea Cain is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland weekly honors are presented by Hercules Tires.

Cain pushed the Colonels (2-6, 1-0 SLC) to a 1-1 record last week, averaging 27.5 points and 12 rebounds in a pair of career performances. She opened conference play on Saturday with 29 points and 13 rebounds in the Colonels’ 89-82 victory over Sam Houston, knocking down a perfect 13-of-13 free throw attempts along the way. Despite falling to Alabama A&M earlier in the week, Cain notched 26 points and 11 boards in the Colonels’ game against the Bulldogs.

The weekly award marks the first of Cain’s collegiate career and the first of the season for the Colonels. Nicholls is back in action Wednesday, Jan. 6, for a conference showdown on the road against Lamar.

Cain had a breakout week for the Colonels, averaging 27.5 points and 12.0 rebounds as Nicholls won its Southland opener over Sam Houston. Cain recorded back-to-back double-doubles against Alabama A&M and the Bearkats, scoring career highs in each outing. She closed out 2020 with 26 points and 11 rebounds at Alabama A&M and followed up with 29 points and 13 rebounds – both career bests - in the victory over Sam Houston.

Her performance against the Bearkats was fueled by a 13-for-13 day at the free throw line, which tied the program record for second most made without a miss. For the week, she shot 52.9 percent from the field and was 19-for-23 from stripe.
