CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Following a championship run as the No. 5 seed in last season’s Southland Soccer Tournament, No. 5 seed Southeastern picked up right where it left off with a 1-0 triumph over No. 4 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday morning at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer Stadium.
Third-Team All-Southland selection Ellie Williams provided the game-winner for the Lady Lions in the 64
th minute, pushing a shot past Islanders keeper Emily Levy on a cross from Darby Gillette.
With the wind at their backs, the Islanders controlled much of the opening period, outshooting the Lady Lions on goal five-to-one. Nadine Maher was kept busy but stopped all five attempts on frame, including a powerful free kick from Emma Crump that she pushed over the bar.
However, SLU flipped the script in the second half with four shots on goal in the first 20 minutes out of the break, culminating with the goal from Williams.
The Lady Lions advance to face top-seeded Northwestern State in the semifinals at 7 p.m. CT Friday.
