No. 3 UIW Punches Ticket to Title Match on Beletic’s Winner

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Isabella Beletic continued her dominant run at the 2021 Southland Soccer Tournament with her third goal in two matches, helping No. 3 seed UIW advance to Sunday’s championship match with a 1-0 victory over No. 2 McNeese on Friday evening at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer Stadium.
After a Payton Adams free kick into the box, the graduate midfielder knocked home the free ball for the game-winning goal in the 78
th minute. The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 9-2-1 over their last 12 matches.
The Cardinals were tested early with Eve Clarkson making a key play to keep a ball out of the net on a shot from Keely Morrow just 95 seconds into the match.
In the second half, the Cowgirls came up with an impressive defensive play of their own as Morgan Schooley made a clean tackle on Keeley Ayala in the box to prevent a shot on the break.
UIW will face the winner of No. 1 Northwestern State and No. 5 Southeastern in Sunday’s championship match at 1 p.m. CT Sunday.
