BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships wrapped Monday afternoon at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Abilene Christian captured its first women’s team championship in program history, while the Stephen F. Austin men’s team secured its first title since the 2015 season and its fourth in program history.
The Wildcats completed the meet with 107 points to lead the women’s standings, followed by runner-up Northwestern State with 103 points. The Lumberjacks’ 105 points bested the men’s standings, just ahead of Southeastern Louisiana’s 100 points.
SLU’s Shea Foster scored 30 points for the Lions in a trio of first-place finishes in the men’s mile, 3,000-meter and 5,000m events, earning the men’s Most Valuable Performer (MVP) honor. SFA’s Kelsey Ramirez nabbed the women’s MVP award after registering 28.5 points for the Ladyjacks.
The Lady Demons earned five individual conference championships to top all women’s competitors. After AnneMarie Broussard’s women’s pole vault victory on day one, Northwestern State garnered four more victories on day two by Lauren Clarke in the triple jump, Janiel Moore in the 60m hurdles, Lynelle Washington in the 60m dash and a team victory in the 4x400m relay.
Stephen F. Austin led the men’s competition with individual conference titles in five events. Asani Hylton topped the men’s high jump, while Paul Martin found gold in the 60m hurdles. Muzuri Mattar took first-place honors in the 400m race and Auhmad Robinson finished first overall in the 200m event. The ‘Jacks closed out the meet with a first-place performance in the 4x400m relay.
The top three finishers in each event final are recognized as First, Second and Third Team All-Conference, respectively. Individual men’s and women’s awards for Coach of the Year, Outstanding Running Events Performer, Outstanding Field Events Performer, Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Athlete of the Year will be nominated and voted upon by head coaches in the coming week.
For athletes that achieved
qualifying marks this season, the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be hosted at the Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville, Ark., March 11-13.
The 2021 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for May 15-16.
