Hayley Barbazon, Ashley Trapp Named Southland Softball Players of the Week
FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State’s Hayley Barbazon and UIW’s Ashley Trapp are the Southland Conference Softball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland weekly honors are presented by
Hercules Tires.
Barbazon pushed the Lady Demons (15-7, 9-0 SLC) to three more victories last week, leading her squad with six hits on eight at-bats for a .750 batting average against Houston Baptist. The senior recorded a run in each game and registered a .750 on-base percentage. NSU is back in action Tuesday night at 6 p.m. CT on the road against Louisiana Tech.
Trapp was key in the circle for the Cardinals (6-15, 2-7 SLC) last week after throwing a pair of complete-game shutouts for UIW, ending in a 6-0 victory at home against Tarleton (March 23) and a 3-0 win on the road against Nicholls (March 26). The Columbus, Texas, native fanned 21 batters and limited opponents to a .146 batting average. UIW returns to the diamond Thursday, April 1, for a doubleheader at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch against the Islanders is slated for 5 p.m.
Softball Hitter of the Week – Hayley Barbazon, Northwestern State – CF – Sr. – Belle Chasse, La.
Barbazon was aggressive at the plate for the Lady Demons this week, tallying six hits against Houston Baptist and extending her squad’s unbeaten record in conference action. The senior also added a stolen base for the weekend as NSU improved to 9-0 in league play, its best start since the 2015 season.

Softball Pitcher of the Week – Ashley Trapp, UIW – Jr. – Columbus, Texas
Trapp threw a pair of shutouts last week, while also picking up her first two wins of the season. The junior posted back-to-back career-high strikeout performances, first against Tarleton with nine and again Friday night at Nicholls with 12. In her outing against the Colonels, she allowed just two hits over seven innings.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
