SFA’s Gavin Kensmil Named Southland Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Gavin Kensmil is the 2020-21 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Tuesday along with its all-academic teams. Student-Athlete of the Year awards are presented by
GEICO.
A Dean’s List member in the fall of 2020, Kensmil touts a 3.52 GPA in kinesiology and is coming off a First Team All-Southland worthy season. The league-leader in field-goal percentage (.635) and offensive rebounds per game (3.1) in conference games, he averaged 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in league play, helping the ‘Jacks to a 12-3 mark.
Stephen F. Austin is one of three institutions with multiple honorees, also placing Cameron Johnson on the second team. Abilene Christian accounted for two first-team slots in Kolton Kohl, an automatic selection as a First-Team All-Southland honoree, and Joe Pleasant, who earns his second all-academic nod. Sam Houston’s Demarkus Lampley lands on the top squad as a first-team all-league pick, and NSU junior Trenton Massner was voted to the all-academic first team.
Lamar garnered two second-team spots in Anderson Kopp and Avery Sullivan. Central Arkansas’ Rylan Bergersen and UIW’s Keaston Willis round out the all-academic second team.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member universities, voted for the Student-Athlete of the Year. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
First team all-conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named First Team All-Academic.
