SLU’s Sawyer, SFA’s Hylton Named Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana’s Johnathon Sawyer and Stephen F. Austin’s Asani Hylton are the Southland Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland weekly honors are presented by Hercules Tires.

Sawyer put on a show for the world last weekend at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Relays in Austin, Texas, taking first place in the 400-meter event with a shocking 45.35 clip. The senior showed out in his hometown, securing a conference record and a top-five performance in the world in the 400m race. He also pushed the Southeastern Louisiana relay team to a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay race with a 3:06.79 finish.

Hylton captured a first-place finish in the decathlon event last weekend at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, scoring 7,536 points. The junior’s performance at the meet currently ranks first in the nation for the decathlon and stands as a personal-best performance. Hylton and the Lumberjacks are back in action for a two-day meet, beginning Friday, April 2, for the UTSA Decathlon event in San Antonio, Texas.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Johnathon Sawyer, Southeastern Louisiana – Sr. – Austin, Texas
Sawyer ran an eye-popping 45.35 in the 400m at the Clyde Littlefield Relays to claim the championship, while posting the best 400m time in the Southland over the past 25 years. His finish marks the fifth fastest in the history of the conference and the best performance since the 1996 season. Sawyer’s time is the fourth best in the world in the outdoor season thus far.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Asani Hylton, Stephen F. Austin – Jr. – Westmoreland, Jamaica
Hylton was on fire over the weekend, as he posted the highest decathlon score in Division I with a 7536 mark at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays to win the event. Hylton set new personal bests in six different events during the decathlon, as well as setting a new personal best in the multis event overall.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
