Sam Houston Secures 2021 Southland Women’s Golf Title
EL DORADO, Ark. – After three hard-fought rounds at the 2021 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship, Sam Houston secured the team title with a score of 917, finishing 53 strokes over par as a squad. All five of the Bearkats’ golfers finished among the top-20 in the individual standings, including Jennifer Herbst and Hanna Alberto, who tied for first place with scores of 224.
The Bearkats were pushed to the brink by Central Arkansas, which finished second with a final score of 936. Camila Moreno led the Bears with a third-place finish as UCA placed all five individuals among the championship’s top-20 finishers. Elin Kumlin tied for fourth overall, while Tania Nunez tied for 10th place. Karley Whittington tied for 14th, followed by Pim-Orn Thitisup’s 20th-place finish.
Houston Baptist filled out the third-place spot with a score of 963 and boasted three top-20 individual finishers, including Elise Parel, who tied for fourth place. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished in fourth place with a 983, followed by UIW with a 985. McNeese took sixth place after scoring a 999, while Lamar (1,013) and Stephen F. Austin (1,094) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Sam Houston’s win marks its fourth conference title in program history, its second-consecutive team championship and the fifth and sixth individual champions for the squad. SHSU has also earned the Southland’s automatic berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament. The ‘Kats will compete at one of four regional sites, which will be announced on the NCAA Women’s Golf selection show, which will be televised Wednesday, April 28, on the GOLF Channel at a time that is to be determined.
