CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Houston Baptist made history as the inaugural Southland Beach Volleyball Tournament champions, following a 3-1 victory over top-seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Islander Courts at Water’s Edge Park on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Huskies’ Lauren Huggins and Allison Stanfill garnered Pair of the Tournament honors after going 5-0 at the No. 4 position over the weekend. The duo gave HBU a point in each of the matches today with two straight-set victories, dominating the Islanders’ fours, 21-12, 21-13.
 
HBU earned its way to the championship dual with a 3-2 triumph over Stephen F. Austin earlier in the day, avenging a day one loss to the Ladyjacks. The contest came down to a third-set showdown on court five with the Huskies’ Lindsay Harris and Kristen Kleymeyer edging out Callie Neumann and Sadie Shipman 15-13 in the final frame to cap a comeback victory (18-21, 21-14, 15-13).
 
The Huskies also picked up a crucial point at No. 3 after Danielle Okeke and Natalie Bennett mounted a four-point comeback down 20-18 to claim the straight-set victory (21-19, 22-20).
